I am a newbie to this forum. I am in the market for a CL 55 Kompressor. I have read a number of posts and threads dedicated to this model so I am aware of many of the 'do's and dont's' when purchasing and owning one of these cars, however.... I have a couple of questions:

Firstly... Am I mad!! for wanting to purchase one of these cars. I know this will be virtually an impossible question to answer but here is the thing.. I own and drive an Audi S8 final edition. I am therefore familiar higher than average running costs. Even still, some of the repair horror stories I have read about defies logic. (I thought the DRC issues with the Audi RS6 was bad!)

Secondly
I have seen the following vehicles on the Autotrader, has anybody been to see these.
2004 Mercedes-Benz CL55K 2dr Auto Amg Coupe 5.4
Loud wood!!

2003 Mercedes-Benz CL55K AMG 2DR AUTO MINT CONDITION/SECOND TO NONE 5.4
Bit Pricey, but nice

2002 Mercedes-Benz CL Class CL Cl55 Amg Kompressor 35000 MILE ONLY VERY RARE 5.4 2dr
Nice!

2002 Mercedes-Benz CL55K 2dr Auto Amg Coupe 5.4
Nice, but has a faulty drivers seat and slight corrosion around one of the rear arches

2003 MERCEDES-BENZ CL CL55K AMG 2DR AUTO + FULL SERVICE HISTORY
Nice.. I am tempted!!

Any comments or views would be most welcome

Welcome to the Forum.

Definitely the fourth one. I definitely could not live with that wood. The one with the corrosion on the rear quarter is a no no,that is one of the things to look out for Aluminium meeting Steel reacts due to the rubber seal leaking also check for rust on the sun roof.

One owner full MB history and has lots of options,Distronic being a rare one, it also has a wood and leather steering wheel which is unusual as the the AMG only came with a leather wheel. I changed mine to,those sort of additions are always a good sign. It looks spot on.

We have had our 55 for a couple of years now and love it. The car was sorted before we bought it. ABC pump and a rear strut etc, front and rear discs all the usual things you do when you buy a new car.

As you found doing your research the ABC can be expensive if it goes wrong £1,100 a corner for struts similar for the pump and they don't go wrong as much as everyone thinks.

You should go and test drive the fourth car and you will see what a grand tourer it is. You won't regret it. Good luck.

I think you should get the wheels Sean ?

I must say the CL is a far superior design IMO :) :thumb: :p

CL55 is 1,930 kg unladen
CLS55 is 1,920 kg unladen

CL is longer but CLS is wider, height is the same for both.

Agree with Peter, CLS looks better with 19's :)

Unfortunately I have not been able to enjoythe car as much as I would like due to work comittments, however I have a list of things I would like to do over the next few weeks, they are vas follows:

1. Get an oil and filter service done (the next service which is a 'B' service is not due for another 8,500 miles, however it was last serviced just under year ago and whist it runs sweet I would like a to change the oil for piece of mind!! For routine servicing I intend to stick to the MB stealers but for any big ticket ad hoc items I will probably use automerc in N London (has anybody used these guys, are they any good??)

2. I noticed the brake pads are a little low up front so I would like to get these changed soon. The car has a full years ticket (MOT) and a full MB Service History and is literally spotless inside and out, nevertheless I intend to change the rear (grubby) brake discs for shiny new ones.

interim oil change an excellent idea .. I have always done them on my AMGs

brake discs and pads are not that extortionate: http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/wheels-tyres/126238-sl55-e55-cls55-discs-pads-cost.html

What's 10 Kg's between friends :p

surprised that CL is a mere 10kg lighter .. but it has lots of aluminium, so that makes sense.

You mean heavier... CL's front wings and boot lid are made of fibre glass.

^ it's a shame the rest of the car isn't made of fibreglass-no rust to worry about then!
