I am giving my car a good going over prior to having its rust issues dealt with.

And I have a number of questions...

1 I am getting through quite a quantity of tar remover on tissues to remove tar spots. However, I seem to be removing something else from the painted surface. Would this be the clear lacquer coating? Am I rubbing too hard? Is a tissue the wrong thing to use? As I do each panel, I am waiting around 30 minutes and then polishing it.

2 I have lower corner rust on 2 doors. How can I get inside the door? Ideally, I'd like to have a look myself to see how bad the inside may be.

3 How easy is it to get access to inside the front wings / wheel arches? Obviously, I know how to remove the wheels :D but how do I get access to the inside of the side indicators?

Hi Les,

In answer to your questions:

1. What type of Tar remover are you using? I presume it's from the like of Halfords etc.? I use White Spirit on any Tar I find. If you're using something harsh like Thinners then rubbing hard with this will certainly affect the lacquer...

2. Not sure how on your model, maybe someone else can help here :dk:

3. I presume you'd have to remove the plastic wheelarch liner and take it from there.

Hope this helps :thumb:

i find methalayted spirits gets it off my alloys , don,t know about paint though

Careful meths is from the same family as cellulose thinners, but more not as aggressive.
Could damage your laquer

Well, thinners contain approx 10% ethanol, whereas meths is 90% ethanol.

It's the toluene and acetone in the thinners you have to be careful about...
