CLK 209 interior lighting

At night when my headlights are on I'm not seeing any interior controls illumination for the exterior lights. i.e. the area below the red line in this picture remains dark and you can't see what setting the lights are on:

Above the red line and everywhere else in the car the interior controls are illuminated as expected.

Is this likely to be a blown bulb or fuse?

There is no illumination in the main light knob. Only when you pull to activate the fogs will the adjacent indicators illuminate
