Hi all!
Just a bit of curious info really...
I have had a problem with my engine for as long as I can remember, but knowing no different, I just ran with it, as the fuel economy was ok, and it ran ok.
The problem is like this; When I start her from cold, she runs quick, like she's supposed too, but as soon as I get up to temperature 80'C or so, she loses power, and it feels like I'm driving a normal 2L car - makes a lot of noise, but no "kick in the pants" feeling. I could actually feel the supercharger switch off if I was accelerating during the temperature change!
Well, speaking to a few different people (MB dealer included) It was suggested that it could be one of a number of things, EGR valve, Lambda sensor, MAF, Supercharger valve etc, etc.
I decided that curiosity was getting the better of me, and took it to a local garage. They put their code reader on, and it didn't throw up any codes...so after a quick look around on the tinterweb, I took it to an MB specialist in North Acton (Mi-Tech) and hooked it up to a proper Star machine. They took it through a few tests, and they quickly came to the conclusion that everything pointed to the Cam Sensor. I failed to see how this would be connected to a temperature related fault, but took their advice on good authority. The part from an MB dealer was £101+VAT, and after getting a quote of £65+VAT from Euro Car Parts, I decided to get this one. Yes, I know that this isn't always the best thing to do, and yes, sometimes it's best to go to the MB stealers for oem parts, but once I had the part in my hand, I could see that it was EXACTLY the same as the faulty one (even had the Merc logo on it!)
It's such a simple thing to change (2 bolts) that I had it done in 10 mins. Then as I took her for a test drive - getting up to temperature - all was as it always had been, sweet and powerful. Then as it reached the point where I expect the loss to occur, nothing changed. I still had all the power I needed on tap! In fact, the one thing that did change is the lovely mechanical chirping from the sweet sounding supercharger online!
It's like having a new car, all those lovely horses at my beck and call!
Hope this was helpful to anyone with similar symptoms...
