I've not test driven either but are they that far apart in power ? Has anyone here driven both. I'm soon going to sell my Lexus and I want a Merc really but I am worried it won't be quick enough. My IS250 is hardly a rocket ship and I know the Merc will be much faster than what I have. I know I should test drive to find out but it's a pain in the butt arranging test drives at dealers.

Try both but the 335 is a fairly bit more powerful. There is about 60bhp in it and about the same in Torque in ft/lbs. The 335d also has a sequential turbo set up so it has more torque lower down the rev range and revs harder too. Basically its more powerful.

Dealers should be falling over themselves to offer deals/test drives. Both are £ cars in their respective ranges and probably CLK220cdi's and 320d coupes more easily sold.

A CLK320cdi is plenty fast however, and both will pi55 all over an IS250. You'll find the 335d a more modern car inside and out, but probably not as comfy but more dynamic. Take what you want from either car and pay for it, comfort and decent dynamics, or less comfort and excellent dynamics.

Personally if I were you I'l be looking at saloon varients, a 211 320cdi is better value for money, and a 535d/335d saloon better value/£.

What about the new E-coupé? Or are you looking at older/used examples?

Depends on what the desire is - the BMW will be obviously quicker and more 'sporty', the MB will be a classier car and more refined IMHO (and you'll get let out of junctions, have usable indicators etc etc...)

I have to admit, badge aside the 335Ds seem to have a strong following...you really need to look/drive at both and decide :o

CLK with a 335D engine?..

Will

330d is a closer comparison to the CLK I think. The 335d is still a 3.0 litre with twin turbos. You do need a test drive they will feel completely different.
My hunch is the 335d will be better, ducks for cover. :)

Do you know I think i'm going completely mad. I've wasted so much money on cars (selling em too early) and getting fed up with them. I don't know what I want. I wanted all bells and tricks and believe you me my Lexus has em all. DVD multichanger, sat nav, bluetooth, voice control, heated/cooled seats, reversing camera, rear electric blind. Electric memory seats both sides. Flippy paddles the lot. It's got a smooth engine, is fairly quick, runs well, loks nice but there IS SOMETHING MISSING ! It's something I had with the C-Class. I bloody loved that motor for all it's faults. I think the bottom line is the rattles which I've solved most of have put me off and it's not quick enough. I love the diesel shove and not having to thrash the car to get performance out of a petrol. Am I talking sense here ?

Lexus IS is a poshed up Toyota .. doesn't matter how many toys it has. It has humble origins.

I don't agree with that. Perhaps my IS250 is but not the LS450. That is a luxury limo on a similar footing with the S class. I've seen many a rock star stepping out of one of them. Paul MacCartney, Brian May etc.

sorry misread that. You did say IS is. Possibly but it's stilla classy car but it doesn't have the image. It's the smallest Lexus I've owned. I had 2 GS300s before.

I think the problem is that it seems to me that most Japanese cars have no real soul.

Lexus for example - they should be great - they're well made/reliable etc and nearly do everything you could ask of a car.

They even compare favourably with the European luxury car makers on most aspects, obviously being superior in some ways (reliabilty/rust etc?). But they just just can't find that 'X' factor IMHO. Still feel a little more flimsy/plasic/clinical or whatever, they get 95% right and you notice a few shortcomings - Toyota parts bin switches, generic LCD panels in places, slightly office-nylon type carpet etc. They struggle to make things feel 'chunky' and 'solid' like MB used to. Can you imagine a Japanese W124 for example?

I think the gap has narrowed over the years, MBs and some others are becoming less special and more mainstream IMHO and Lexus have improved and maintained an excellent reputation.

Money no object, for almost any car in any sector I don't aspire for a Lexus unfortunately, and that's where it still is today. People don't sing about Lexus, you don't have the history there etc. They just don't make you smile.

If I wanted a fleet of reliable minicabs, or a reliable 4x4 type car then perhaps I'd be looking at Japanese options. But for a prestige/sporty car I still think that European stuff is more appealing.

I reckon most people convince themselves that they want a Lexus based on the facts and from reading magazine reviews, and tell themselves that they want one - bought with the 'head'. Where as you don't always do everything like that in life, you know MB dealers can be useless and that the cars aren't quite as good as they used to be, but you still want to drive/look at/clean a Mercedes for the feel good factor. They're bought with the heart :o

All IMHO of course.

Absolutely Will. Go with the heart, the brain'll find a way to follow. A couple of years ago I thought about changing the CLK. I tried 'em all but couldn't find anything I liked. Still got the CLK.

Hi,
I used to own a BMW 330D and yes the engine is superb..
I really did laugh out loud when I read earlier in this post about not being let out of junctions.. Thats not a joke at all. In fact it was the first thing I noticed when I got the BMW.. There is a junction I use every day on the way to work.. My previous car to the BM was a VW Golf and I would say the average wait at that junction was 5/6 cars before someone flashed me to let me go..
Day 1 of BMW ownership and I counted 31 cars before I was allowed to pull out !!!
The Merc I have now definately has softer more compliant suspension..
I would say there is very little between them for build quality..
If you were to ask me which car I would choose to do a long drive in, then I would go Merc.
My Father used to live in Southampton and he died earlier in the year.. I needed to go to sort out stuff for funeral etc and did a round trip to Southampton and back of 660 miles (the most I have ever done in one day in any car) and it was done comfortably and without drama. I dont think there are many cars you could do such a long distance in and still feel fresh at the end.
I think you need to try both cars because in thier own ways they are both excellent machines.

If you main criteria is speed then the BM it is. We have a 535d (debadged) and away from roundabouts etc the shove is enough to keep E46 M3s honest, so the E90 will only be more so. Great economy and emissions too. Moderns BMs can be made more forgiving in the ride dept by fitting non rft, but the set up is still more sporty than a MB. Idrive shouldn't be underestimated in the PIA stakes though.

I guess you are gonna have to get out there and try both I'm afraid. See if the dealers will drop loan cars off to you to save you the aggro.

Nothing wrong with Toyota, in our family we ran two Celicas and an MR2 from 1993 till this year when we sold the remaining Celica with 151,000 miles on it for £2500.
In all that time other than one clutch, the odd bulb and routine servicing we never had a repair or breakdown and the performance in all three was class leading, I believe Lexus attracts similar comment.
If it weren't for the Japanese car industry and the standards it set we would all still be driving unrefined, unreliable rust buckets and never leaving home without toolbox, water, fan belt, tow rope, jump leads and overalls in the boot.

Lexus was created as a brand to challenge Mercedes in the American market and it has been very successful there too. Compared to most American soft barges that isn' t a hard one to achieve. The IS is actually sold in Japan as a Toyota ....says it all IMHO.It is a well made car but has no soul. Can't explain what I mean - just a feeling I have when driving the car. If comfort is your No1 priority then Volvo comes to the forefront - I just think MB has that great blend of comfort, sporty feeling, feel good factor and still leaves me with a grin on my face...

Gather if you're looking at CLK v 335d that you are considering 2nd hand (oops used)...in that case I would have thought better deals on CLK as new E coupe will have affected prices.

Have a go in the E350 cdi coupe - CLK 320 cdi - and 335d coupe.....

But lets face it -- you always lose money on cars -- fact of life....unless you are a trader..:D

One key question. What are CLKs like for rattles ? Is the Sport most prone to rattling than the softer normal suspension ? I am going to test drive one next week but that won't tell me of long term rattle problems ?

You-re right! 1000% I drive a lot in UK and Europe and all i can say is : never had back pain.
Some indian guy told me : " once you drive a mercedes you-ll never drive something else "

Ps. No offence about racism ! That indian guy is one of my best frieds:)

My CLK280 is pretty much rattle free thankfully, though is prone to wind noise round pillarless windows.
This AVANTGARDE spec, so not as hard on the road as the SPORT.My previous car Sport Coupe was very hard on the road compared to the CLK.
