CLK 55 amg de-cat

Now I'm confused.

And does anyone on this site own a decatted car that has actually passed the MOT emissions test after decatting?

Yes, but as stated, only after I gave proof of the registration date.

The argument in this thread is that so long as your emissions are low enough it can legitamatelly pass without a cat.

I expect pre-93? car that are allowed not to have cats have a less strict emissions test to pass hence IanAlexander2 needing to prove his registration date.

Emmissions Test

My J Reg W124 Coupe has been decatted and fitted with a freeflow after market exhaust system. It has passed the MOT for the last 3 years. But not once have I actually seen them do an emmissions test on the car. Due to its age (1992) I don't think that the test needs to be done . .

So the yet unanswered question is how does one remove the cats, in my case a '98 SL60, and pass the emissions test?

CATs are meant to be on cars registered post August 1992,

Yes, my 500 was registered Feb not Nov as stated above.

So, re post 92 cars, is it necessaary to have a cat or to pass the emissions test ot both?

Is it possible to de-cat the SL60 (98) and remain legal?

ian as said above i think if it passes the emmsions test they you should be fine and legal i would imagine, i cant see a mot place saying you failed due to there being no cat on the car if it passes on the emmissions..... but im not 100%

So if that is the case, the next and obvious question is, would a de-catted 60 pass the emissions test? My guess is that it would not. Ergo, is it possible to de cat a 60?

Now I'm confused.

As a question of fact, if a car passes the MOT emissions tests after removing the cat, is it still illegal to use it on the road?

My MOT tester has passed smaller engined cars that have had cats removed but are highly tuned.
On larger engines you have no chance of passing without at least pre-cats.

Does it sound any diffrent ?
Where did you get it done ?
Cheers

Used Longlife Exhausts on Tonge Rd Leeds. Charge me £500 for the two cats then £150 for the stainless steel pipes (all inc VAT). Did take a lot of time, but leant me a car for the day so I went into Leeds. Doesn't sound very much different, but I didn't want/ask it to. I have not had it through an MOT, though it sailed through previous MOT with only half of one precat left and one of the back cats totally gone, (no substrate), so I don't think it will make any difference. The power is probably not up as much as 10-15% (sales talk on their part), but it is significantly smoother and more powerful.

what mileage did you original MB cats go at?

Got the car with 43k on I guess the cats went about 12k later, but still drove for about 12 months with the rattle.

My car sailed through the emissions test with just the pre-cats in place. I would be surprised if it failed without any at all to be honest, such was the margin it passed by. THIS thread may be of use to anyone thinking of removing the cats.

Do you still have the original backbox? This is immense and really restricts the sound. I've heard my 55 with the complete exhaust system off (just cats on) and it sounds like a drag monster. It's ridiculous and not very Mercedes!

Anyway, the AMG backbox has the pipes swirling back and forth inside the box hence it is very restrictive on noise - and I expect it doesn't help the power much.

As for improvements in power by decatting, you would expect a minimal increase in power but an improvement in the delivery of torque. A 10%-15% increase is more what one would expect when decatting a turbocharged car as exhausts can be really restrictive on such cars. In fact, for N/A cars, you want a bit of restriction by way of not having a "bake-bean" can exhaust system (think tuned Jap sports cars) as back pressure improves torque a little; a N/A car with no exhaust or cats would not be as torquey. (I might be wrong on all this as the last time I investigated how power, torque and exhaust design affected things was about 5 years ago.)

All M-B back boxes are quite effective/restrictive. That's why replacing the centre muffler with a straight-through pipe only has a mild effect.

Still have the back box on. I am no expert and am sure you guys know better than me, but it does feel significantly faster and more powerful.
