I have decided to bite the bullet and have all 4 wheel arches treated by a professional. The rears have been showing increasing blisters and rust spots and I have now noticed the fronts starting to do likewise. They have given a ballpark quote of £600 .
The question is after this is done, how to protect the wheel arch edges from stone chips from tyres ? ( in my opinion this is what causes the problems initially)

Best thing you can do to prevent rust in wheel arches is to jet wash them on a regular basis. Making sure your cars drain holes are clear also will help prevent your car rotting from the inside out.

The way mercedes designed the wheel arch lip return means it is practically impossible to keep that spotless. I do clean the arches as best as I can each time I wash the car but to do it right would mean removing the wheels each time and I am not that
dedicated.

After having them repaired consider having them coated with rust protection for example ( Lanoguard ) or something similar, not the fashioned underseal which dries hard and can chip leaving gaps where water can get behind then start rusting again. These other rust prote tions are non drying so can't chip so the bodywork underneath is always protected, some may need an annual check up others don't. Maybe the bodyshop can apply it when they've finished the repairs no harm in asking.

Mine were done last year.
As a preventative measure I've painted clear waxoyl around and inside the lip, no idea how effective it'll be. Must be better than nothing, time will tell.

My view is winter salt and grit is the cause.

I should add that the house I an in has a gravel driveway and when leaving some gravel gets stuck in the tyre tread , then, when on the road these pieces of gravel obviously get thrown off at speed and inevitably must sometimes hit the wheel arch lips?

Get bigger gravel . Romsey at 20mm should do it.

Rented property

Bloke at the end of my street for reasons know only to himself has gravel on his parking not much bigger than grains of sand , basically 'pea' gravel used for drainage.

Proper mess it makes , all comes down to being a tight a$$ . Cheap gravel £8/tonne , good stuff £18+ .

I repeat, I live in a rented property so I have no choice in gravel size
