Hi Everyone, having recently bought a 2005 Clk500 m113 engine Ive noticed a bit of lifter/tappet noise on start up/first 5 minutes of driving. As I understand it this is fairly common with this series of engine. On some of the American forums people have been talking about a oil pipe (maybe plastic) the breaks or blocks and starves the lifters of oil? Does anyone know anymore about this or what it might cost to fix it? I see from an earlier post that there is a mercedes specialist in Portsmouth that seems to be quite active on this forum, he has talked about changing said pipe for customers. However I think he was making reference to r129 models and I'm not sure if the same applies to my car. Being the sort of chap I am I will definately change it as my car is going in for a service on the 24th and I don't like leaving anything to chance. You help and advice is much appreciated, thanks in advance.

They are indeed talking about a different engine. The 119.

Have you tried doing an oil and filter change and flush out? This may help.

Thanks BlackC55. Now having realised that the noise continues on even when the engine is warm I now longer think it is a lifter/tappet problem. The engine does not make the noise on tick over (stationary position) even when revved! The noise comes only under load particularly on acceleration from stand still between 1500 & 2500 rpm. As soon as you start to Coast or take your foot of the gas the noise goes. When cruising you can't hear it! Would I be right in thinking I might have a stretched or badly tensioned timing chain? I really moving away from the lifter idea as the noise would surely be there all the time? Anyone any ideas? Also cost of replacement? And a good specialist, I live in the Southampton area. Thanks in advance for your help

Sorry BlackC55 I've just realised that you are the specialist in Portsmouth I was talking about! I'm new to all this forum stuff and just picking things up. Have you ever changed a cam chain and tensioner on the V8?

I would be looking at the intake manifold flaps as to making the noise rather than the chain. It needs to be heard by an expert firstly.

Engine Mounts

Thanks for your reply, further reading leads me to believe that it might be the engine/transmission mounts. Apparently there a weak spot on the w209 and especially the V8 models. It doesn't sound like an engine mount problem but lots of owners have had this problem and that has been the cure. I also get a bit of vibration on tick over, the noise is some sort of piston slap on acceleration/engine load ( I'm going to put my foot hard on the on the brake and rev it a bit to see if it's makes the noise stationary). Has anyone else changed their engine mounts? I'm going to go ahead and have them done and will of course let you know how I get on! I'm about to start spending some serious money on trying to get this sorted as the noise is quite concerning. So any experience anyone has is very much welcomed. The cars done 76000 miles with regular documented oil changes, I don't think it's really done enough miles to have big/small end problems or a stretched cam chain but who knows?

If you are in Southampton it would be worth a visit to BlackC55 (Olly) and the lads at PCS. He's not far from you and would be worth it for piece of mind.

If the noise only occurs under load / acceleration could it be pinking, or is it not this sort of sound?

Hi Chris - a long time after your post, but I have the same symptoms. Tapping type noise, only under load, hot or cold. Tickover no noise. Did you ever get to the bottom of this?
Many thanks, David
