So yet another problem today, car driving down the road and suddenly "ESP defective vistit workshop" popped up and the throttle died, could not accelerate at all (would only idle - rough). So pulled over turned car of and after a few attempts started back up, esp warning now vanished, but car running like ****, revs hunting quite badly at random, and amber engine warning light on.

Every now and again all the power comes back and it smooths out, but then just as i jump for joy, it dies again
WAS PUT ON A STAR MACHINE TODAY AND NOTHING CAME UP - EEK

Anyone got a clue?

MAF?
But it really needs a further investigation.

would have thought that would have flagged up? and are they known for throwing up the ESP warning etc etc

I would of expected to see at least one fault code in one of the control units.

Could well be the throttle body is failing.

Are you sure you have not disturbed something around the throttle with your cooling mod to the air inlet box ????, just a suggestion could be something that simple.

i did think this myself, but nothing touches anywhere, this is an odd one

It does sound like the TB is the issue. I doubt a MAF as a faulty one will not give you ESP warnings.

ok thanks so much, this is helping to narrow it down, idle is really hunting bad when i pull up to lights (almost stalls) but no loss of power on hard acceleration.. do you know what could be wrong with the tb? does it just need a clean out? where is it, under the maf?

It could also be an air leak. This is what I would be checking first. Esp around the maf.

Almost certainly related to the recent work you did around the inlet? Hose/electrical connection not seated correctly or could even be debris from the modification - tape fragments etc if you've disturbed the air filters etc?

Hopefully something cheap and simple.

Pulling the air box on and off can move the MAF from it's seat. This will allow air to bypass the MAF.

Remove airbox.

Place hand on top of MAF - try to rock it from side to side back to front.

It should not move as it is clipped down by brackets which are connected to the engine. If you remove the MAF you will see how and where it should sit. It should be a tight interference fit into its intake seal. When you re-fit the airbox, gently lower it MAF end first onto the MAF then check it is sat on it's lugs before pushing it home.

yes it is loose i just check, awsome thanks - will try to re-fit it properly later today, it must have come loose after a took the box off to wrap it

right, its not the maf thats loose, its the thing the maf is connected to, which 90 degree turns on to top of engine engine, i pulled and pushed it off with ease? thats not right is it? also every time its idling rough it stinks of fuel?

It should clip in. Can you get it out? You should then see how it fits back in.

Failing that post up some pics. We may be able to see the prob.
