A new Steering Angle Sensor is being fitted next week. Can some kind person tell me what it does and how important it is. This fault was diognosed on Friday when I had my car serviced. I am paying £350 for a new one to be fitted. All help apperciated.

The steering angle sensor is part of the electronic stability system, It uses inputs from yaw and pitch sensors throttle position, brakes and steering angle to determine if the car is outside pre-set parameters and possibly about to go out of control. If so the car will reduce throttle and / or apply braking at opposite wheels front and back to bring the car back under control.

I assume I am OK using the car, but taking my time with only a few miles until next tuesday when a new one is being fixed. Must be a sophisticated piece of kit. Do they often go wrong.

It is OK to use it, the system may still work but possibly not fully.

As for how often they fail, no idea if it is a common fault,

What problems or error warnings did you have?

If none, I have to wonder why it needs changing, if it is faulty you will have had some kind of message on the dash - eg ESP unavailable.

When I picked the car up we knew there was an ESP fault as the display indicated ESP fault workshop visit required. When car was serviced on Friday the check indicated Angle Sensor has a fault so we have ordered a new Steering Angle Sensor so it should be all OK after fitting. Lets hope.

I am sure they have diagnosed it correctly, and hey can fail.

One question though, when you are travelling in a dead straight line, is the steering wheel in the dead ahead position?

I ask this because sometimes tracking faults can give ESP errors, and steering angle sensors are wrongly diagnosed as faulty.

Tracking is perfect. Steering wheel dead centre.
The Independant Mercedes Garage in Coventry gave me a first class service. I have always used Main Dealers in the past for my Volvo's and Jags
but will now continue to use Independants. The mechanics in this garage are all Mercedes trained so I have every confidence in there service, they
have saved me a lot of money in what was done on the service. They included a free Air Con service. Very pleased. They also did a free
pick up and delivery which saved me a lot of time.
Only additional item was a new set of wiper blades and in a previous post I did not include the £39 MOT cost.
