Car
CLS320
I have a choice of 2008 CLS500 (388bhp) and a 2009 CLS320 CDI

Both are the same price, same mileage, and similar spec, I only do around 6k miles a year.

What would cost more to run the petrol or the diesel?

What would you go for and why?

CLS500 based on your mileage.

What's the spec of both cars?

500 will cost more to run, but be much more fun.

nothing beats a V8, certainly not a diesel anyway, IMO.

as you're doing 6k miles, the additional fuel cost isn't that significant.

500 will no doubt depreciate more though.

The 500 should be cheaper to buy in the first place...petrol, v8- not much demand for cars such as that..

Spec for the 500: prefaclift car

Commad
Parktronic
Sunroof
AMG bodykit
Rear blinds
DVD /CD
Keyless
Nappa Hide
Heated Memory seats
Airmatic suspension

Spec for 320 facelift

Commad
Parktronic
DVD /CD
Heated Memory seats

Were there any major improvements when they face lifted the car

facelift has new harddisk COMAND system with built in bluetooth, all LED rear lights, bigger and uglier wing mirrors, different exhaust trim, different steering wheels, better parktronic sensorts on bumpers ..

that's all I can remember, no doubt I have missed other things.

I think you also need to consider how long you will keep it and how important the resale value will be to you. Normally for 6k miles per year I would have said petrol, but I suspect in 2,3,4 years time the 320 will be worth quite a lot more than the 500.

The 320 is newer. I'd also hope it's a lower miles car too which do sway things in its favour but I'd err towards the V8 car

When buying a car, I listen to my heart rather my wallet, or what, to other people, would make sense. V8... two thirds of the way to a V12:D

As a diesel owner I'd.......................................

go for the V8 - a much better spec (though the comand is older). Airmatic, keyless and AMG kit are all desirable.

However, I'd echo the comments about resale.

Rough figures;
V8 mpg- 20-30mpg
V6 CDi mpg- 35-50mpg.

It also depends on how long you're going to own it for as well, the residuals on big petrol engines is getting worse and worse, so that is a big part of your question.

Example:
2008 CLS 500 with 50k miles, book price is; £13,900.
2009 CLS 320 CDi with 50k miles, book price is; £16,900.

I do similar miles and had a ML350 Petrol for 3 years.

In the end though it still gets annoying filling up and watching the fuel go down so quick. If you can get your head around that then so be it, now I've swapped for a 320Cdi its great seeing high 40's on every trip.

Yes I agree the difference over 6000 miles is very little but its still used to get me me in the end. I would work trips out say 40 miles and think thats £12 each way... it started to bug me,

Now we jump in either car and get over 40mpg. In the 'real' world performance will be similar. Fit a D6 to the Cdi and it will be great. Ok its not a V8 and if you have to have the rubble then no point asking.

I would now go for the 320cdi newer style car, easier to sell on as prices for fuel are only going one way. However if you havn't had a V8 and want to sctratch that itch then go for it.

As a cls500(2008) owner you can guess which i'd say:rolleyes:,the diesel won't have airmatic & if it has 19" alloys the ride will be firm, real world fuel consumption over a tank will be low 20's if you don't do too many journeys sat in traffic & your right foots not too heavy, your best bet is to test drive both so you can make your own comparisons.

I had this decision to make as well and even though my mileage is only around 8K a year, I chose the diesel CLS.

Reason? Well, I hate constantly filling up, I love the torque and the ease of driving a powerful diesel, I resent the road tax charged for the big petrol and I prefer the potentially higher resale value.

No doubting the appeal of the V8, but having had a few V8s in my time, I've scratched that itch, so the diesel was my choice. :)

Re. filling up ... I've got a V6 CDI (Vito) and a V8 petrol (SL), and they both do about the same MPG!

not the same comparison though, V6 petrol against V6 diesel.

we're talking V8 petrol against V6 diesel

With an 80 liter tank, at least 300 miles is possible .. that's not really constantly filling up, is it?

my CLS55 is £260 a year to tax :)
