CLS500 vs 320cdi

my CLS55 is £260 a year to tax :)
It wouldn't be if it was after '06 though!

Each to their own though. I've nothing against petrol V8s or V12s, they're just not for me. With the amount of town driving I do, mpg would be very bad... :D

Remember the M273 can suffer in a similar manner re timing gear to the M272. Although that means I am recommending a V6CDi. I never thought I'd see the day.

That is actually quite a hard decision, I love my V8's and would normally 100% say 500, however unless your enticed by the spec and primarily because there is no pricing saving of the petrol against the diesel and the diesel is a facelift, I would lean towards the diesel.

However, what I would do is use the similarity of the diesel to knock the price down on the 500 and then with a lower initial purchase price the 500 is more justifiable.

To quote petrol head Robbie Coltrane 'Everybody should have the chance to drive a car with a large fruity V8, just to know how perfect driving can be'

I'd go with the V8.

Quote "not the same comparison though, V6 petrol against V6 diesel.

we're talking V8 petrol against V6 diesel "

Completly agree my point was fuel, I bet my ML350 was 'as' economical as a CLS500

If the OP has never had a V8 and wants to scratch that itch go for it. Me I'm happy with a 750mile plus range each time I fill up.

Airmatic and other fancy options - Great when your the first owner or have a very good warranty. These cars (specially the 500's) will or even are under £10K now and bits are pricey. I just see these sorts of options as more possible bills along the way.

Drive both and see what you think, for me the main thing on the CLS is looks and both look cool :)

I would also guess a much larger %age are Cdi's

If you're going to scratch the V8 itch, then do it 'properly' and itch it big with a forced induction V8, or aggressive large capacity one. A 55K or 63 would be my only choice.

I've had several aspirated V8s and a single Supercharged V8. The 'charged one was something else ;)

I've done the v8 thing had a xj8 in the family for 8 years will test drive the 320 diesel on the weekend,

Thanks for your input guys:)

If you want to feel special everytime you get in your car... 500 all the way

and with 6k miles a year... i'd want to look forward to driving my car... not hearing a tractor :)

Based on what you've said though, jokes aside, i'd go for the 500 without a doubt.

not hearing a tractor :)
Odd you should say that 'cos my 320cdi doesn't sound anything like a tractor - in fact it's very quiet and when pushed has a nice, throaty growl, not unlike a V8.... :)

I'd agree with that.

Compared to the V8 any diesel will sound like a tractor... sorry.

..must be a very refined tractor then.. :D Lamborghini maybe? :D

If you can afford to run it and aren't worried about depreciation, then it would have to be the V8.
However, if you're going to keep the car for a few years and want as much as possible for it when selling it, then go for the diesel as it'll probably hold it's value a lot better.

I've got the 320cdi CLS with a Brabus D6 and I've got to say the performance is more than enough - diesels won't rev like a petrol engined car and might not have a V8 growl - but the cdi does sound nice and always puts a smile on my face.

I look forward to driving my tractor when even I do.

I like it even more getting 40 plus MPG :)

I was thinking walking to work this morning, in normally daily / weekly drives.... how would I benifit from a V8. Most of my journeys it would make little or no difference. Our trips to europe would just mean more stops for fuel.

If however you like *** and live in a place with good open roads, few cars (and hopefully poilce) then ok the V8 but in the same token If I was after a car for those sorts of roads I would want a Porsche or something that handles really well.

:)

Fuel economy on the 500 will be very similar to the cls55k. The difference is a huge, the AMG has what I can only describe as 'theatre'. I can't see the depreciation being too dissimilar either, if anything the AMG will hold value better.
