I dont think there is much of a debate for v6 cdi vs v8. It's down to fuel economy, it's either a concern or it isn't.
I do however think there is a debate between a 500 an a 55. Yes the 55 is a beast, but as a daily driver you could say the 500 is better, just for the fact it's silent. That's really down to driving style I guess.

One thing I'm not overly happy about is the attitude that petrol V8s are better than diesel V6s. Some people may prefer them, but it's horses for courses and I think it's somewhat churlish to imply that diesel is almost inferior or some kind of poor relation.
At the end of the day, the diesel car costs more to buy and holds it's value way better.... and for the kind of driving most people are able to do on todays over crowded, over enforced roads, the diesel V6 is fast enough and in my opinion, refined enough. And what's wrong with wanting to use less fuel? Surely that's having a social conscience?

I agree!
V6 Diesel is more than enough for our English roads outside Scotland and some of the Westcountry roads.
Diesel has better midrange torque than the V8's.
However all that dissapears if you've ever sat at dual carridegway way lights and some spotty Oiks have rocked up beside ya in their 'souped' hatch blastin the drum and base and you've then proceeded to nail a V8/V10/V12 away from the lights with launch control.
Mate of mine used to have an RS6 Estate in Manchester and was always gettin' Oiks thinking they could do him from the lights.
He used to keep a Table Tennis Bat in the glove box with a picture of a Turtle on one side and a Hare on tother.
His Girlfriend used to show the Turtle side first then flip to the Hare on lift off!
