Cls55 gearbox metal shavings

I rang a few and got a few different quotes. Highest was £400.00 all in

The most reasonable was £250.00 all in. The £250 was a stupid amount of miles. I opted for a more local outfit with great reviews. Cost was £330.00 all in. Go with who you feel most at rest with. Just to confirm Mb main dealers were the most expensive.

I have to say every premises I phoned no one come in under £250.00 .

Thanks for your message bud. What did they quote for, fluid, filter an gasket? Like what I’ve been quoted?

£330.00 I paid. All in.

Morning all, the garage the car is with only uses autologic diagnostic tool! Should I take it to autoclass in Milton Keynes as they have Star diagnostic?

The issue we have here is no one knows exactly what you have been quoted for, questions need to be asked.
  • The minimum (that no one does) is to suck oil from dipstick tube and top up.
  • Next, drain fluid and replace along with new filter, use old bolts and gasket : not recommended
  • Do the above with new sump bolts and gasket.
  • Do the above but insist that the torque converter and cooling circuit is drained. a good few litres of old fluid remains in transmission if this is not done.
  • As above and replace connector plug at the same time.
  • As above and replace the conductor plate with a re-furb unit.As above but replace the conductor plate with a MB part.
It doesn't take much to see how the first option would be way cheaper than the last one.

There is no drain plug on the tc
I know but it can still be drained if the 'complete' service method is used. I asked the (rhetorical) question on here a few years back..'which bright spark decided to omit the TC drain plug that was present on earlier versions of this gearbox..?'

I think the answer is...the accountant.

This gearbox problem of getting all the old oil out seems to not only be a MB problem,I see that late model Citroens with the real auto box which is also fitted to a number of other makes, and as always is sealed for life :D holds 6 litres of expensive oil and if you decide to do the oil change you can only get 3 litres out,and so the advice is do it at least 3 times to be sure of getting a complete oil change.o_O

When I did mine I just unbolted the return cooler line and started the engine for a 30 sec if I remember , All fluid from TC and cooler lines etc drained.... Total of 6 Ltrs

Thats close, but I think with oil cooler and TC it's closer to 8 litres on a 5G. Not 100% sure. But omitting the drain plug (that once existed) on the TC was dumb. The aperture in the bell housing with its little plastic cover was still continued

Apologies ,have done that job 4 years ago , I forgot how much oil came out.

At least they have left the dipstick tube so was easy to fill up

If there is metal filings in the oil and in the sump pan no amount of fluid changes will fix it. The gearbox needs stripping and inspecting to see what has happened. Burnt oil and filings are not a good sign.

Update. Picked the car up from Autoclass Milton Keynes. They drained the gearbox and torque converter, refilled with new fluid, replaced the filter and any gaskets. Drives perfect. Unfortunately the technician told me it looked as though the fluid had never been changed. I ask how severe the metal particles were and he advised me that the small amount in the pan once drained would be totally normal for a gearbox that hasn’t been changed since new. I’m off out to enjoy the noise this makes. Thanks to all for your input and help.

Any magnets in the pan? Before or after?

Thanks to the good people at Autoclass, hopefully you and your car/gearbox should now be good for many more miles.

Even if the vehicle hasn’t had new fluid in 15 years?

I certainly hope so. Would highly recommend these guys to anyone else. They didn’t mess about and I had a few phone calls keeping me updated during the time they had the car with them.
