COMAND Experts Please

In my W164 ML, I've been stuck with a Chinese Clone of the COMAND Nav/Stereo. Presumably fitted because the Replacement was too expensive.

I'd like to upgrade (on a Budget) and I'm looking for a Used COMAND or an aftermarket NAV/Stereo recommendation that will be Pluig and Play.

Loads of questions I've not managed to answer with a search of the Forum:-

1. Are the COMAND units coded to a particular car, so I can't use them in my ML? Or is it an easy re-coding job?

2. What about a COMAND from another Mercedes model? Are they different shapes, meaning they won't physically fit?

3. I've heard Kenwood make a plug n play replacement, anyone know the model number, so I can search for one on ebay?

You can see I'm coming from a very low "product knowledge" position here....

i have a command unit that was taken from an ml and it will not work properly in my e320cdi,i have spoken to command and they have informed me i need the unit from an e320 cdi,if you check with command which model and serial number you need if this one fits you can have it very cheap,

Thanks for the offer but the serial number means it's a 2001 model designed for the earlier shape W163, so won't fit my W164.

Okay;

1). No but some NTG 2.5 W164 comand units are theft protected.

2). No, you need either NTG2 or NT 2.5 from a W164 vehicle.

3). No its Alpine and they are around £1500 to buy.

NTG 2.5 is the best way to go as it works and integrates with the existing cluster and steering wheel controls. Its also the cheapest between that and the Alpine.
