Am I right in thinking that the only way to get a firmware upgrade is via a delaer/independant with a STAR wotsit? You can't just pop a DVD in.

I've upgraded maps on the NTG4 I retrofitted but the firmware is still showing 00.20.50_ECE for "NAVI ver." so clearly there is no firmware upgrade process on the map discs.

If it is dealer only what is the most common reason for performing such a firmware upgrade under warranty?

If I'm wrong and you can do it yourself. Where do i source the firmware disc.

On the newer cars the firmware can only be updated via a genuine (maintained) STAR system. It does use disks but you cant use the disks without STAR. The STAR system goes online to MB which then checks the VIN against the database held at MB and the revision of S/W in the control unit you want updated. If there is newer F/W then it guides you through the update process.

You can normally get this done under warranty especially if you raise a concern about the functionality. For instance if you say that the navigation sometimes calculates the wrong route then they should apply the latest firmware to fix it.

All MB dealers have genuine STAR as do a number of independents ;)

so is 02.15.01_ECE the latest???

So I've got my Comand coded in which I assume means that since the SatNav is now on the 'datacard' it is now officially warranted and I can get a dealer to upgrade firmware?

Assuming I can give a good enough reason.

Do those independents have to pay for the updated FW from MB?

Well there will be no warranty on it from MB unless they retrofitted it.

Yes they can now update the firmware, but expect to pay if the cars out of warranty..

They are sent firmware update discs as part of their subscription for having a genuine MB Star system for which they pay a yearly fee.

The car is 3 months old (62 plate) with a build date of April 2012.

How would a dealer know it was retrofitted now that it has been 'coded in'?

Not that I would mind paying a small fee. I'm just against paying what I consider a ridiculous amount for a firmware upgrade to fix a known bug. Why they can't just give me the disk to pop in myself is beyond me.

If under warranty should be done free even if retrofit, mine was.

You cant do it yourself as the car has to be connected to STAR and MB in Germany to do the update.

Hi Guys
Anyone who has retrofitted a comand, how did you get the option added to the datacard? Only 5 days left on warranty and need a firmware update desperately to make bluetooth audio work correctly, so any help would be appreciated, please?
My vehicle is 2011 w212 ntg4.
Many thanks
