Having spent a few hours going through every menu option, reading the manual over and over, I cant get the satnav to work properly. The problem appears to be the satnav thinkss the car is about 1/4 of a mile away from where it actually is. I have driven to junctions and re-set the "location" and its given me a route and the intial direction thaat is correct, but the moment I drive off, of course it stays woth the same direction as it doesnt know where it is.

In fact most of the time I get the "off road" message, whatever road Im on!

Its the 2001 Comand Dx with a 2004 disc in it, if that helps?

Any ideas, pleeeeeese

Simon, have you tried re-calibrating it? I don't think I did it when I had new tyres fitted last time....

I did do that bit but couldnt remember what size tyres, but didnt think that would make such a big difference, maybe over a long journey. Im guessing that something is wrong in the sat positioning maybe the aerial or modem or whatever its called? Ive done the reset factory settings thing but that just changed the language to german! didnt help the satnav.

Seems strange, how many sats was it picking up when stationary? The tyre sizes are 235 40 18 on the front and 265 35 18 on the rear.

Not sure, how do you tell hoiw many sats?

IIRC when you are stationary and the Nav is on, showing the map, it tells you at the top of the screen i.e. 3 sat or 5 sat or 7 sat depending on how many it's picking up.

Didnt see any, have to try it again tommorrow. Any tips? should i leave the car stationary and turned on for a while?

As soon as you turn the Nav function on it should start looking for sats. It can take a few seconds to pick them up.

Might be worth having a word with Alfie, think he's the COMAND specialist on here.

Sorry, can't think of anything else I'm affraid, like I said before, I only used the Nav once or twice and that was just after I got the car two years ago.

Did you give it a nice wash today in the sunshine?:)

Didnt get the chance mate, spent most of the day either stuck in mock trading room or in traffic!

I'm not a COMAND expert (far from it!) but from your description of "setting current location" it sounds to me as though it's not getting a satellite fix at all and is just relying on the dead reckoning functionality. As such I'd guess it's either an antenna problem or the satellite receiver has gone u/s.

Thanks Phil, yep Ive doen a search of some of Alfies posts and it sounds possible, Ill tyry and give hom a call on Monday see what he says.

Cheers

Just checked and there are 7 or 8 satelittes showing but the car still thinks that it is a few hundred yards away from where it really is, which is frustrating.

Is there any way of doing some sort of Hard-reboot for the system perhaps?

I had something similar; COMAND would occasionally not know where it was, despite receiving 7-8 satellites. It turned out to be a failed gyro. Popped a new one in and problem sorted; it's quite a simple replacement.

I got my replacement from Alfie, helpful chap that he is.

Thanks, roughly how much did it cost?

Gyro is my reckoning on this.

Was coming back from Bath - had this problem all the way home - most frustrating... next day --- no problems at all.

Can a gyro be intermittent? Or perhaps just a one off?

Unlikely to be a gyro in your car as its a facelifted one. Never ever heard of one of those going wrong.

Probably lack of satellites in your case. We should probably reposition your antenna for you as I think we can put it in a better palce.

Cheers Mark - but as it was a one off - I will keep an eye on it. If it becomes a major problem will give you a call..:thumb:

Thanks!, I got saw email just now, is this an easy DIY fit? wherabouts is the gyro located?

Thanks
Simon

Its inside the comand unit on the right as you look from the front. The lid of the comand needs to come off to replace it. Not too difficult.
