COMAND or not to comand

I have just placed an order for one of the new M Classes. At present I have a C class and my only real regret was not having comand fitted to it, so this was a must for the new M.

I have just found out that the new COMAND unit does not have the nav computer in the boot but a single CD/DVD drive in the headunit. In order to use the sat nav you have to keep swapping the Nav DVD in and out of the headunit so that you can play audio CD's.

For a company that prides itself on putting everything at your fingertips, having to fumble about for a nav dvd everytime you want to enter a route is ridiculous!!!

I was under the impression that once the route was programmed in you can remove the NAV disk and listen to Cd's whilst on the move. How about getting a CD changer fitted then you can leave the NAV disk in the drive all the time!

I have a 2004 ML with COMMAND.

What I had to do to get over this problem was to get a 6 stack CD Player fitted as an optional extra. Then your 6 CD's play from the player in the luggage area controlled by the COMMAND system and you leave your sat. nav disc in the COMMAND headunit all the time.

Then you get music and sat nav at the same time with no disc swapping needed when you are on the move.

Job done - cost and extra £200 though! :(

Oh and no video facility.

Of course I ordered the M class not knowing this since all the previous brochures had the 'old' comand specified. Now I am too late to change the spec so fitting a cd autochanger will cost me £350 plus installation!!! DOH

That is the point you shouldn't have to pay extra!!!!!!

It is MB that we are dealing with here!

From memory Video/TV was yet another option at around £750

Must admit though the sat nav system is superb - I have used it in Switzerland and France and it is excellent - I would not want to travel in Europe without it.

When I showed an interest at the dealers about adding COMMAND to the spec of the ML I was surprised at how little they knew about it - i learned more about it reading posts and asking questions here!
