My PC at work is left on all the time, strange thing this morning. Tried to access the internet and the "This page cannot be displayed" warning came up. Hit the refresh button and it restarted my computer with some warning I did not have time to read. Any ideas anyone. I regularly scan with AdAware, I have Norton antivirus and also scan with Spybot.

TIA Geoff

No updates and we do our own cleaning occasionally:D :D

If it is a virus, and you are still having problems, try scanning it with AVG (Free trial antivirus - www.grisoft.com) - sorted mine out recently when Adaware, spybot, and McAfee all failed !

What OS is the PC running? My work one is Win2K and I get strange stuff happening with web access unless I restart it periodically, I've now got into the habit of leaving it doing a shutdown/restart when I leave in the evening.

Which browser are you using? Some known issues with java also, can you remember what was on the screen before the refresh?

Hi,

Just interested as to why you leave your (work) computer on all the time (assuming you don't do a 24h day  )?

PC Pro carried out a recent survey showing how much energy/money was wasted by this practice and, of course, this also increases your chance of external contamination etc.

Cheers,

Your computer will typically last longer though, due to fewer warm-up/cool-down and disk spin up/down cycles.

Virtually all updates ask if you want to restart now or later. I'd follow the suggestion of an independent virus check in case something has got passed the protection you currently have.

Yes I wondered about why it would be left on, and yes leaving it on for longer will lengthen its life. Roundabouts & swings.

Not sure that's true of desktop machines in an office environment (as opposed to servers in a 'clean room')? Startup/shutdown must impose some stresses, but obviously there's wear to disk and fan motors / bearings / etc. when left running continuously. Plus the machine will ingest more fluff/dust, which may lead to hotter running over time?

We are only a small office, 2 pc's through a Netgear router. We run XP Pro and they are left on to run the various cleanup programs, antivirus etc. Our old machines were turned off/on daily with Windows 98 and we seem to have endless probs with them. The strange thing is, it only happens to my PC not the other one in the office. Thanks for the info, I will try the virus scan tomorrow.
