Hi Presscot, After a year of trying to sort it, it turned out to be a leaking capacitor in the radio sending current to earth via a number of circuits. I never suspected the radio as it was working fine - it was a last resort and a problem that no one seems to have had. Disconnected radio and all was well - the radio was the original Blaupunkt.
Most of my posts are on the "Mercedes Benz owners forum" The final one is
SRS light/windows/drain - RESOLVED SRS light/windows/drain - RESOLVED - Mercedes-Benz Owners' Forums
If you want the whole step by step saga of what I went through to find the fault go to the "Mercedes benz owners forum" and go to "Search - advanced" and search by username "gorselands", you'll be able to read the whole sorry saga of checking, replacing, and checking again. Auto electricians were not interested as they said it could take ages and cost a fortune to pin the fault down.
Good luck - let me know how you get on. The SRS light on is an MOT failure but if you take the bulb out it is an advisory. But that doesn't solve the problem of why it's staying on. Are there any other problems associated with the SRS light? for example I had problems with the windows and heated rear screen being operative with the ignition off - doors shut etc anyway if you go to my posts you can READ ALL ABOUT IT!
