Conflicting results if ULEZ compliant

Thank you so much DF. I took it into my head (before anyone had replied) and rang the TFL "ULEZ Team" on 0343 222 2222. I spoke to a guy called Lee and explained my predicament. I also gave him the old car reg. He confirmed the car is compliant by the old reg. He said the system struggles to "read" private plates. All I needed to do was send in photos of the V5C (no COC) and email to [email protected] and the private reg will get added. Takes a couple of days.

Thanks for everyone's help. I'll update this post when it happens or I get an email.
I can’t believe liberate told by the ULEZ team that the system struggles to read private plates.

It's not that it struggles to read private plates.

The problem is the way it processes information from the DVLA and uses the plate information.

The claim about NOx emissions information not being present in the DVLA records is a red herring - you can reasonably determine that a diesel vehicle is Euro 6 from the DVLA record. The issue with private plates isn't that they cannot read them - but rather that they appear to depend on the date of the plate as part of their checks and cannot always deal with private plates. They clearly have a problem interpreting the DVLA data and they possibly have additional issues of timeliness where their data can be several weeks out of date.

They could also apply some manual checks on before sending out fines as well - to remove obvious false charges. Eg. a quick check on records marked as having private plates to check the actual vehicle type.

Instead they send out the fine and leave it to their victim driver to appeal against the invalid fine.

This simply should not be acceptable. The system they have setup should be declared not fit for purpose unless properly fixed.

I would also be inclined to suggest that if they make a false claim that they are liable to pay the falsely claimed amount to the victim in compensation. That might get them to clean up their act.

It might, and it might be right,
but ultimately the tax payer would end up covering the shortfall created.
I'm not saying I have any sympathy with these modern taxation schemes.

But after I found his car was not compliant (which we thought it was) I checked this having stumbled across it via Google hit.

Surely that indicates that the information against the registration plate is there. So why can't TFL use the existing infrastructure that is available?. It does highlight though the owners who get a fine or are paying when they don't have too. And they simply don't know as not everyone is car person = £££££

And the email from TFL has just come through to say it's compliant. Database is being amended.

Happy days.

TFL are getting away with operating an inadequate system and process.

They have no incentive to sort it or perform additional diligence on fines and charges issued mistakenly because they are managing to get away with placing the burden of fixing their errors on to the victims of their mistakes.

All very confusing, My SL500 2003 model IS exempt from the ULEZ charge .....
I wouldn’t have thought there’d be any doubt there whatsoever.

Our 2002 runabout Fiesta is ULEZ exempt.
