Merc ML270 CDI Inspiration
Iv only had the ML270 for a couple of months but im getting itchy feet and want to change for a few reasons.

1. I would really like a bigger engine car
2. Im having nothing but constant problems with the ML. It seems there is no end in sight for the issues i am having and its putting me off keeping it longer

I have been looking at CL/CLK500's and also the BMW 545i.

Insurance wise my premium wont go up too much. Fuel wise crusing those sort of cars can still achieve similar MPG to the ML so its not an issue for normal use.

What are your guys opinions, has anyone made such a move from a 4X4 to a saloon big engined petrol? Anything i should look out for on the merc 500 engine? Do you think its the right move or should i stick with the ML and fix it, maybe my love for the car will return when all the issues have finally been fixed :)

Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi, I have a CL600 biturbo, I can say without doubt its one of the finest cars I have had (roughly 70). I get an average of 20mpg out of her, this is mainly on short runs of 15/20miles. The ABC is something else, once experienced it will spoil you for other "normal" cars. 500BHP and enough torque to satisfy anyone. Yes they have the potential to cost a lot of money in repairs, however, you can purchase a Tier one warranty for them if under 1000 miles and full history. Mine is a 2005 with 32K on the clock when purchased in 2011. I renewed the warranty last July for £1308.60. In the time I have owned it I have had a new alarm siren fitted, a problem with the Aircon sorted, and a new ABC pump fitted, all under warranty.
The rear seats are proper adult seats, and not token ones you get in lesser vehicles.
You will read horror stories about this went wrong, that went wrong, you only hear about cars that go wrong. There must be plenty on the road that do not have lots of problems. Your ML has had its share, however, that does not mean they are all problematic.
Find a good one, like I did, and enjoy. If you are ever up in this part of the world, pop in and have a look/drive.

Further to the above. The V12 has 24 spark plugs, they need changing at ????miles or every four years. Check this has been done. It is not a cheap job, plus they might seize if left, a nightmare scenario.

Hi

I have an 05 plate clk500, owned it just over a year and its brilliant. Not sure what your mpg is on the ML but I get around 16 round town and 25 on a run, but I have only done just over 3,000 between mots so I'm not worried about it, but if I was doing higher mileage it would cost a fortune. It's great to drive, very smooth. Mine is the 7 speed auto which I have heard issues about the early versions, but I've just had the auto oil changed and it seems a lot smoother when changing. Tyres are expensive so if you do buy one, check they are in good condition, i replaced a rear one recently and it cost over £200. i would certainly recommend one of these, just puts a smile on your face, the acceleration is amazing.

Hi. I moved from a Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland (with fantastic Mercedes 3.0 engine) to an Audi RS6 Quattro. Huge amount of power (580bhp) although not proper 4WD pretty good in snow or ice - seemed the best of both worlds. Just ordered the E63S so still got the bug for big engines!

Hi,

Thanks for all the feedback! The ML give me 21MPG round town and 26MPG on a long run. Its mostly used for a short parkway journey from day to day by the Mrs (about 10 miles per day) and i use it on weekends round town or the occasional long trip. By the time the thing heats up she has reached work :)

I dont think my budget would allow to go upto a 600 bi-turbo unfortunately :( although i would love one!! Im looking at a V8 mostly. So far iv only really seen 3 different cars that would fit the bill within budget (around 7K):

1. Merc CL500 or CLK500
2. BMW 545i
3. Audi A6 4.2 quattro.

Mainly after Something reliable, something that will give 20MPG plus with normal driving and something that will put a smile on my face at the weekends :)
