Convertible roof up with air con or down and get hot?

Must admit I had the roof up coming home today !! Standing temp of car was 35.c .. As a rule the roof would be down but I was sweltering from + 40.c in the kitchen and needed a quick cool down so I left it up with climate control at the coolest , first time I've not had roof down when the weather is good , incidentally it rained too on my way home so I did the right thing totally IMO

Well he was spot on. Temp was low 40's. Driving along at a reasonable speed was fine but at slow speeds or in traffic the heat was truly unbearable even with the A/C running flat out.
^ This.

It's no accident that the UK (with its cooler climate) is the biggest market in Europe for convertibles. In high temperatures with the sun overhead it can become very uncomfortable with the roof down if at slow speed or sitting in traffic.

BTW, in very high ambient temperatures and strong sun with the roof down, running the aircon can fool your body into feeling comfortable when it's actually overheating. You still need to drink lots of water and use sunblock / wear a hat.

Down here in SW France, the average summer temp is in the low 30Cs and anything up to 46C.

The missus and I have an agreement - when it gets to 25C, the roof (Jag XKR convertible) goes up. Aircon is on all the time, even in winter, as a) it stops misting and b) the seals need to be oiled all year round.

Tbh, that's one of the main reasons we also bought the CL, as the Jag is used more outside the summer season.

Except the CL's aircon refused to come on during a half-hour journey home today - bah! Car temp. read steady 39C.

I'm sure there may be some of you that have had this scenario. When I bought my first car back in the mid 80's I had a cracking 'Y' reg cavalier. The car overheated from the day I bought it.

I remember sitting in traffic on a sweltering summer day on the M6 along side a guy in his BMW. His windows were up and he was sat there in a suit with his A/C cooling nicely.

Not only did my car not have A/C but it was overheating like a good un. So I'm sat there with the heater on full blast to try and keep the engine temp down, eyes transfixed on the temperature gauge fully in the red sweating buckets. I can safely say it was the most uncomfortable car journey ever.

Aah the joys of youth :)

It was roof down and air con on this morning for the school run :-)

Just back from a run to Loughborough.
Roof down, aircon on.
Lovely.

What do you people do on a park bench?

Sun's out, it's meant to be hot, tis the reason you bought the car!.

My roof is never up, my pet hate is seeing a convertible on a sunny day with the roof up!

AC or no AC that roof is down. If I'm sat in traffic I'm getting a nice tan.

To moan about being to hot is ridiculous

Ever been stuck in a jam on the M25 at 30C and strong sun - I have and it's not much fun with the top down. But that's the only time I can think of when I've put the roof up in hot weather.

Down here it is just too hot to have the roof down on a cloudless day in summer, in fact it can be downright dangerous on the nose, ears, forehead and top of the head if you are getting older in life. Your hands will sweat all over the steering wheel too, but a 5.00 pound pair of pigskin welding gloves solves that problem. :)

In summer you need cloud cover, cabbies are just not really high summer cars at all unfortunately - unless you have a wet T-shirt on to help with things. :):)

I've been stuck on the m25 in motorcycle leathers at 30+ degrees.

To moan about getting to hot in a high end high spec convertible beggars belief.

I'm not moaning - just saying that on the one occasion it was more comfortable with the roof up and the aircon on :dk:

If you're too hot, you're too hot. There are, of course, degrees of discomfort...

How do you get stuck in a traffic jam on a motorbike. You just drive past all the stationary traffic.

To moan about being stuck in traffic on a motorbike just beggars belief. ;)

Suppose the road was closed entirely because of an RTC ?

If we get into this debate again it will be never ending:D

There had been an accident and the cars had left no gap to filter through, I was on a big old zzr1100 fully pannierd up with top box and luggage on the back too! to risky to filter with sweat dripping in my eyes!

made me realize again why I love living so far oop norf so much

Roof down today, rained a bit too, still kept it down:eek: might have to put it back up if the clouds clear though :p

roof down, air con on, oh yeah, and a cap because last time my bald spot got sunburnt!!!! :-(
