Could this be one of the first SBC casualties?

I've owned my E55 for just over a year now, and reading the various forums highlighting the potential pitfalls of ownership such as Airmatic and SBC has made me question whether to keep it longterm. It does suck that Mercedes make customers paythrough the nose for parts knowing their failings. There are likely to be a lot of casualties with standard E Class if the costs remain so high. Hopefully the high costs will at least keep E55K' s out of the hands of chavs!

Lol - let's hope so. I couldn't face running a car which I could see was being driven by chavs. At the moment, I have only seen one other E55K and that's because it lives near me and is one of the reasons why I bought one (black 2003 one with personal plate)...

I, like you, also question whether to keep the car long term or not. I've no doubt some of the other E55K regulars have similar thoughts, except the hardcore nutters (you know who you are).

However, I go through the same thought process - you're really only going to need one SBC unit and the car will probably well past it by the time it would need another, and maybe suspension which is expensive (again, probably only once in the time you have it unless you keep it for another decade), but other than that, there aren't many other things to go wrong on the E55K that are hugely expensive.

If you factor in say an SBC unit and full set of suspension over the next 5 or 6 years, the costs spread over the time you've had it I don't believe would be that bad. I'm comparing this to something moderately interesting (e.g. I had a Saab 9-5 Aero HOT), but given you have this car now means you are probably into more exciting cars anyway.

Given what I've seen on here, those with E320 CDIs have had some tasty bills and if they had airmatic, they could also be in line for the same SBC and suspension costs we will be...

I'm not sure what I would replace mine with either. The replacement brakes cost scares me a bit - and the frequency of replacement would be greater than that of the SBC unit you would be then avoiding...
