Hi,

I managed to crack my sump today, oil is leakinging out continously, so its not just a hairline crack, its actually slightly dented.

Anyone have any experience of fixing such a problem. Is is possible to patch up the crack or possibly weld something over it, or does it need replacing.

If it needs replacing, is it an 'engine out job' . . any idea of cost?

Its a W124 230CE 102 4 cylinder engine.

I am totally gutted . . Please help!!

You poor thing - how did you do that - sleeping policeman?

Hope you can get it fixed easily.

It should be able to be changed in situ.

Don't mess about trying to repair as it will not be economical, and will be risky.

Get a quote from the dealer and also an independant, it should not be too bad mate.

Good luck.

Well I managed to patch the crack up with some compound I picked up in Halfords . . great stuff . . sets rock hard in 10mins and is not affected by petrol, oil, acid etc . . just mixed some up and slapped it on and the leak is all sorted. Best £4.99 I've spend in ages!!

However thats just my short term solution to stop my drive looking like a texas oil field. Going to make my way down to George Fraser bright and early tomorrow morning to get the sump changed. Gonna cost me £300 (ouch!) but its gotta be done. Might just get a service in while I'm at it . .

Many Thanks

A really good engineering shop in the Aircraft Industry would be able to Tig weld the sump at a fraction of £300. Taking it off can be done in situ but you will have to undo the engine mountings and raise the engine a couple of inches. I have run arround in a welded sump in the past with no problems. Ground back after and you wont even notice it has been done, hense Good Engineering shop.

This is the route I would take also. Just find a fabricators that deal with aluminium fabrications.

I'tll cost you the price of a four pack and a sump gasket.

Thanks for the advice guys, I ended up taking the car down to George Fraser to get the sump replaced. Its the first time I've been down their and the experience filled me with confidence. The job was not rushed, in fact they had my car in from 8:30 till around 14:30 and did an excellent job. There was no problem with me hanging around and watching them work. Other garages I've been to in the past seem to discourage this.

I also had the transmission fluid changed while I was there. George is a great guy and really seems to know his stuff. He willing to take the time to explain everything to you properly and I will be going back to him for sure for any future work.

I also mentioned the forum to him, and he says he has been meaning to get on here and say a few words, but just hasn't found the time recently.

Many Thanks
