Looking to get a decent CREE XML T6 torch.

Anyone have any recommendations, have been looking on ebay but they vary alot in price and don't really know what to look out for. good makes etc

Those CREE ones are really bright, one of my mates has 2 mounted on the front of his bike, when we are cycling we can turn our lights off and just ride with his.

Are these those cycle lights that are so bright that even the darker side of my psyche is illuminated?

If so then they are an even bigger menace than aftermarket HID's and the flashing ones should come with an epilepsy warning.

Not sure why they sell the flashing ones, as they are annoying on the bike too, but yes, they are really bright, but if they are set up properly they should not annoy drivers.

Cree torches are brilliant, what do you need them for, work lights or general use?

I don't think I've ever seen one set up properly... unless setup properly means aim it directly at the rear view mirror of the car in front.

I don't get why they need to be that bright when used on a road with streetlamps?

I have one as a headtorch that I use when outdoors at night... it's spectacularly bright. The catch is it will blind anyone you look at; and totally screws any night-vision your eyes adapt to.

If you get one, my only two bits of advice are to get reputable batteries and a torch that can be dimmed - the lower the better.

If where you are riding has no streetlamps, you may have to ride through somewhere that does have street lamps. I ride out in the countryside and its pitch black, so the lights I have are to see where I am going. If I were pootling around town a £15 "be seen light" would be adequate. I aim my lights at the verge about 5m in front of me. This does not seem to bother 99% of drivers, but you do get the odd one or two that still take offence and try and blind you with main beam. In this case I just "wobble" a bit. This scares the driver into slowing down to a a walking pace.

Just to note I am a competent rider (3000 miles a year +) so the "wobble" is controlled and used to slow nervous drivers, (normally the ones that use main beam all the time)

We are issued the LED LENSER torches at work.

The one I have will put a spot on something at 200metres. It also has the function of being able to be overdriven at 120% for short periods to work close up.

£40

I had a decent make but lower end bike light (£180) that after 2 years started going flat early and was on its 3rd bracket.

I got 2 cree lights in bike holders for £10 just to try, inc another spare rear light. Much better! Wont use anything else. They also have a 'zoom' type lens to vary the beam pattern. They even work quite well at speed off road!

They drive me insane!

When there is 15 of them cycling in the dark its like the sun is moving down the road.

+1 for the LED LENSER torches

I've had a few of them. Great quality and very versatile - I've got a bicycle bracket for mine too. Bloody brilliant piece of kit for under £50/£60
