Hi there. Has anyone any comments on these (http://www.tdi-tuning.co.uk/car_and_van_diesel_tuning_boxes/mercedes)as I was considering purchasing to try and save a little fuel. The principal is they apparently increase power over a number of areas so needing less fuel to achieve the same performance. They look simple enough to fit but I would appreciate anyone’s experience in using one of these.

We used to fit lots of tuning boxes and have used all the major makes at customers requests, by far the best box on the market IMHO is Diesel Tuning UK LTD | Improved Diesel Performance And Economy | Digital Diesel Tuning Box best performance / fuel saving by a mile.

Just one word of caution after the box is fitted you tend to find people complain they don't get the fuel savings promised, it's usually down to the fact that now you also have extra power people tend to use that extra power and fuel consumption remains unchanged.

Well I made an early Sunday morning decision and have ordered a Diesel Tuning box. Once fitted I will keep this post updated on my results to help others. They are not the cheapest of gadgets you could add to your Mercedes but if they save their initial cost over the next couple of years and give improved performance for the less technical of us then it will be worth the effort. :thumb:

Tuning Box Fitted

Well I received it in a couple of days of purchase and fitted in 10 mins the same evening. Its neat and tidy with enough cable to tuck away discreetly. My average was 26.3 MPG as I do the same trip day in day out so I shall give it month and see the results. The system is adjustable and at present it is set midway. :thumb:

Hi there John. Please do update as I am interested to see what a difference they make.

Hi There. You will have to give me a month as I think it needs to give the unit an average drive distance as previously noted.

The first 100 or so miles have resulted in a 28.9 Mpg , an increase of 2.5 Mpg, so things are looking promising.:bannana:

Well I have just looked at the current results and are as follows. 560 miles @ 32.5 Mpg and average speed 38 Mph. Looking good. :bannana:

Again I have checked and results are as follows. 922 miles @ 31.2 Mpg and average speed 35 Mph. So with this data I have moved the jumper up 2 of the 4 positions to see if this addresses the lag you get when you accelerate hard. I have just taken it out for a quick spin and there is an improvement in torque and far less lag, so I shall do another 900+ miles before any more adjusting.

Are these brim-to-brim calculations?

Hi SPX. No, not brim to brim as these results are just for my curiosity as the unit purchase offered some 9 options. I do the same trip every day which gives me a standard start point. There are so many variants including the weather that accuracy is not an option so its just for fun. Having spoken to others in the last few months who have fitted various makes I do wonder as its just a software adjustment unit why so different a price (£69.00 - £345.00). As previously stated mine is mid range at £280 and when I compared it with a friends who’s gave the same options at half the price with the only visible difference being the quality of said units (black plastic injected moulded unit and mine a CNC machined aluminium unit anodised black). Interesting both set-ups used the same fittings, lengths of cables and even colours so one might think these were made whole-sale by a third party. Still these days we all think we are being ripped off but on a plus none have given a negative feed back. I think the pressure should be placed squarely at the feet of the manufacturers as they never release the best possible format at first so it allows them to improve at a later date but I am old and grumpy so what do I know. :thumb:

I have now driven over 3K and my final choice is a midway setting which gives me 4+ mpg = 30.5 mpg @ 38 mph. I am not the smoothest of drivers as others will I am sure confirm but over the next year I should scrape the cost back. I purchased some black loom tape and the extra cables just melt into the back ground.
P.S. Just for fun try the top setting because the power is great and there is no dwell when you push the pedal down hard. Fuel consumption goes out the window but its fun to get the rears spinning in an automatic.

How do you manage to get such low figures for MPG? My 221 used to avg 42 (after a remap..)

Assume is all town work?

Yes, traffic jams where a 12 mile stretch could take an hour. I have been on some 300 mile round trips at 50-80mph and still only got 35mpg.:dk:

Up-Date: 3 weeks into my final setting and I now read 31.7mpg @ 35mph so an improvement from the start of 6+ mpg.

At that rate I should get my initial investment back over the next year and it should just cover the fuel price increase.

Well its been a few months now since I set the final option on the tuning box and are now reading 30.8mpg @ 34mph.(approximate 5mpg more than standard) So just under 8 months to go and I will be even. :thumb:My only improvement on this box would be to have an external way of changing settings for those days you want to play a bit rough. :D:D:D

So are the reading your getting from the onboard computer????
