Police said the drivers of the other vehicles were left with serious injuries "some of which were deemed life-changing" as a result of XXXXXX not "paying attention to the road".

XXXXXX was sentenced to 15 months in prison at Warwick Crown Court on Friday after pleading guilty to five counts of dangerous driving at an earlier hearing, police said.

WTF Was the driver doing

Texting/Whatsapp'ing/FB

What 1000s of drivers do every single day, at least when people are on their phones talking, for the most part they are looking at the road.

Just had a young driver prosecuted and sentenced here in Kent for driving into the back of a lady who was stationary and killing her. Evidence suggested that the driver was texting at the time and had been texting earlier in the day whilst driving. He made no effort to brake, just drove straight into her car.
Thomas Coleman jailed after killing Sylvia Lloyds in crash near Brenzett

Me too - there are as many people looking down when sat at lights are there are looking forward .

Unlikely, the lorry stays relatively on course. if asleep it would venture either right or left no?

Maybe, not an expert for such, but one thing is clear, not paying attention to what is going on in front of him :fail

Looking at paperwork / the notes for the next delivery is another favourite. In a similar incident, the lorry driver was found to have been watching pornography on his laptop.

It's only pure luck that there aren't more of these types of collisions due to mobile phone use; I don't suppose it will improve with the increase of in-car wifi / connectivity / apps.

XXXXXX should not be allowed to breed.

On Friday, outside of our office on a fairly quiet high st, a transit pick up went into the back of a stationary corsa.

The transit appeared not to brake, and the corsa was shoved about 25 - 30 yards up the road.

The noise and mess was incredible, luckily no one was hurt

I think the constabulary have their own articulated truck now driving about so as to see inside trucks on motorways checking that drivers are not updating face book and such!
or i could have dreamt it!

Tony.

I ride my motorcycle to work down M5 into Bristol every day. I see at least 4-7 people on phones texting, on iPad, both hands on the wheel iPad in place of horn!
When I come off the motorway I see people, well mostly women, putting makeup on.
In summer I filter past quite a few drivers mostly men, smoking hash! It's 0830 FFS.

Since we got our dog and as a result walking more at various times of day and night i am amazed at the amount of people i see on a daily basis paying no attention to the actual task of driving.

The night time ones are the best as you can see the screen lighting up their whole face as they try "discretely" to use their devices. :fail

As mentioned numerous times in the past : caught using a mobile device then it should be confiscated , sim card removed and the device destroyed in front of the owner.

The thought of loosing a £500+ smartphone (and its contents) that they still paying for is the only time they will take notice.

Kenny

Quite right jotter. Several police forces have had these for a number of years now, including South Yorkshire, Kent, Essex and West Midlands.

Stop trying to convince me to get a dashcam fitted :-) I am under enough pressure from the wife

There is a new bus lane near our house...it isn't yet in operation. Yet drivers will all sit in the other lane in a long slow queue instead of driving up the soon to be bus lane unobstructed for perhaps 400 yards to the traffic lights.

The thing is though, even when it was previously a bus lane ( before the road was widened) it ended at 6pm...they are still there at 6:30.

Most drivers, 99/100, do not know nor care where they are...they are stupid.

As above, the sheer number of motorists still chatting/texting on the phone whilst driving is beyond me. The penalty of imprisonment and a hefty fine is obviously not deterring a lot of motorists.
Also, why do drivers think it's ok to hold their phone a foot away from their ear on speaker and drive. It's no different than holding a phone to their ear.

I think the Police really need to step up and fine/prosecute more drivers for holding a mobile phone whilst driving. Maybe if word gets about that more and more people are getting done then the numbers committing these offences will hopefully reduce and therefore the number of accidents caused by this type of behaviour drop too.

Hampshire Constabulary do this on the M3 several times a year.
