Date of Liability?

I concede the point about the MOT but as Grav has pointed out this might prove to be a can of worms. Another thing to think about is the vehicle recognition number plate equipment. If someone has had a demonstration ride and the vehicle has been snapped, that will also get flagged to the DVLA.

I am NOT trying to be a Smart Alec, I am hopefully convincing you to triple check that everything, but everything is dated the 1st of March as someone, somewhere MIGHT be in deep do , does.

John

I was just guessing that the vehicle had been declared as SORN because that would have allowed the owner (dealer) to claim back the road tax. If it wasn't then trade plates would be OK I think.

Just rung the dealer, he is going to tax the car for 6 months for me and I shall give him the money. That way I know that I won't be liable for any months the vehicle has not been declared SORN!
So I feel happier about that, plus it means I won't have to wait for my Insurance documents to come through to tax it. I can just get in it and drive home!!

Well done and I for one wish you many miles of very happy motoring.

Good luck with the new car,
John

I know we pay for it, but I thought it was illegal to sell a car with no road tax, otherwise the dealer is selling an unlicensed vehicle, effectively illegal

I also thought they had to tax it in the new owner's name. I've always had to provide a cover note (normally get the insurance company to send it direct to the dealer) before being able to pick the car up.

Can't say I've heard of it but this is the first time I have bought from a dealer, usually private. I would tax it if my insurance had come through (may well come tomorrow) but I asked for a cover note they said it would take just as long, 3-5 days, to come through the post.

Thankyou, I hope I have many miles in it too, will get some pictures up soon!:bannana:

Not certain about this, but I thought that, strictly, road fund licence (if it's even still called that) is not transferrable - which would make it theoretically impossible to sell a car with road tax. (Except, as mentioned, a dealer can arrange it on a buyer's behalf.)

It's not transferable to another car, but certainly the car with tax disc changes ownership at the same time so the tax transfers to the new owner.

Also it is not illegal to sell a car without tax, but the onus is on the new owner to drive it legally.

One thing everyone has missed.
The vehicle is showing up as unlicenced, not SORN.

The following is taken from the dvla website:
SORN declarations are valid for 12 months and must be renewed, if the vehicle is kept off the road for a further period.

Therefore, the registered keeper is liable to a fine from the date of liability.
There is nothing to say it was ever declared sorn.

Edited to add: Gina has nothing to worry about as long as she makes sure the date of purchase is correct as John said.

Now, this is a good discussion:rock: :bannana:

The point you are making Grav is entirely correct. All Gina needs to do is to make sure that she signs and dates the current V5 as of the 1st March. This is when her liability begins. When the V5 is sent to DVLA this might flag up again that the vehicle was previously unlicensed and they will possibly investigate further. But Gina has nothing to worry about.
Wonder why the car was unlicensed all that time? Old MOT's might give an indication as to whether it was off road or being driven untaxed. Just curious!

Does this not put another owner on the log book though?:(

I thought dealers did not have to register the car in their name so when they sell them on the last owner is the owner previous to the dealer? So effectively would still have only 2 previous owners rather than making it 3 with the dealer?
Do I make sense? Or am I getting the wrong end of the stick?
