De-cat....

Billy:Find a another set of downpipes (many about) and try it
As I've told you many times,I'm sure it'll pass

eberspracher used to make night heaters for lorries and coaches they used to be top notch stuff
they still are top at night heaters for trucks motor homes and caravans they also as said make exhausts and used to make window frames aswell

A long time ago on my c200, we (my dad and I) didn't have the money for a cat so we opened the old one like a tin of baked beans and took a mallet to the inside mesh stuff and sealed it again. Passed 1 more MOT after that then we sold it. The performance improved because it was clogged before and it got slightly more raspier, but thats all I noticed.

The standard cat in my Elise is also made by them. I also know that they have high spec air con & filtration systems for mobile installations. i.e. units, iso containers, vehicles, etc...

has anybody heard of these guys?... Eberspächer

Hi

What other members said...they do all sorts.

They made exhaust systems for AMG during late 80's to early 90's.

The exhaust system on my 3.2 is made by them..I needed a seat when I got a quote for a new rear box..he he

An important consideration here is that when the next revision of MoT rules starts to be enforced (from July?), a decatted car will be an automatic failure regardless of the emissions level.

I work with a few mot stations and all have heard different versions of these new rules.
But these 3 stand out as the most uninforceable rubbish:HID headlights fitted, a de-cat to the exhaust, and a remap or chip to the ecu.

To fail a car for having any of these, you need a guideline or reason that they dont meet;)

so in your eyes how would the non chipped ecu rule stand on a car that has stand alone managment on it i say this as i have a heavily tunned sierra cosworth which no longer has the ford webber marreli ecu on it but now runs an autronic sm4 programmable ecu with mapped water injection lanch control and anti lag

Billy, I asked my MOT guy the same question about a de-cat. He even said to me its not a problem to de-cat the car, but there are other implications involved and he clearly advised me I will need to take the car to another MOT station thereafter if I do decide to get it done.

For example, if you ever get stopped by the police and for whatever reason they decide to check your car out (underneath too) and see theres no cats, they'll want you to produce the MOT certificate, question your MOT station and it opens a whole can of worms. Apparently its happened to a few people he knows who have de-catted their cars so hence why he said he'll never risk it in his station.

My decision in the end was to stick with the cats (piece of mind without having to worry about the long term hassles and implications), replace them with sport 100 cell cats and lose the centre box.

You have nothing to worry about, let me give you an idea of how silly this rule actuly is. To check if a cars ecu has been played with, first you would need to visualy inspect it for things like plug and play chips. An mot tester is not allowed to remove your hub-caps, let alone any ecu covers or parts of the cars dashboard to do a visual inspection of it so this cannot be done. There is a rumor of a computer being pluged plugged in to your car to scan the ecu for modifications, but again they are not allowed to remove plug covers or dashboard panels to gain access. Now think of a car that has had an engine change, the tester will find a different ecu to the one he was expecting, so what data can he compare it to if he dosent know the year or model the ecu came from.

These are just a few reasons but there are many more.

Sorry to bring back a dead thread......just some clear advice, if your car is something like pre 1995, you can de-cat it all day long - as long as your car meets emmissions targets you are good to go.

Hope this clears things up.

Not true - sorry.

It says - On vehicles that qualify for a full cat test , check the presence of the catalytic converter.

Vehicles before 1 august 1992 - j reg and before don't qualify for full cat test, but for bet test, so presence of cat doesn't need to be checked.
