hi

if i buy the full front to rear metal brake lines for a W124 estate from the dealer will it come as a shaped part, or just on a roll?

what is the best type of brake pipe to fit that isnt stupid money? copper?

thanks

Derek

copper nickel sometimes referred to as cupro/nickel much better and a lot longer lasting than copper. From memory I think they come shaped from the dealer.

Johnsco is your pipe man :thumb:

also, does anyone know what size fittings are on the ends of the pipes on a W124. I may probably end up buying it from a local motor factor on a roll as they shape it if i take in the old lines. but before i go pulling off all the old brake lines i would like to know if they do the size i need etc.

also, on a W124 estate to replace the "front to rear" brake lines do i need to drop the subframe or can it be done without? i need the cheapest fix as possible and plan to do DIY

thanks

Derek

The brake lines come un formed. Better to use copper nickel. Flaring the ends of steel pipe is hard work too. (Mb lines are not normal steel material)

i'll be getting the flaring done by a local place I have used before, which I think they used copper.

Can these be fitted without any movement of the subframe on a W124 estate?

Definitely use copper nickel brake pipe.
It's stronger and more resistant to salt-water corrosion than copper.
They use it extensively for sea-water systems on nuclear submarines.

It flares easily and is more-easily formed than steel.
It will last the life of the car.
Volvo have fitted it as original equipment for over 30 years.

I used to work at the factory is Leeds where it was made.
We made both copper and copper-nickel pipe to the same dimensions.
We did not recommend copper for vehicle use.

We sold it under the trade name "Kunifer-10".
That is Cu-Ni-Fe ....... Often known as 90/10 copper-nickel.

I purchased 3 rear brake lines from mercedes in Nov 2006 for 1995 coupe.

They were left and right under the subframe, and down length of car towards front to middle join.

Each line came to exact proper length and fully made up with all fittings assembled ready to bolt on.

Just needed to be bent to match ones being removed.

They are double walled and I thought were cheap.

£10.62

£7.72

£11.14

All prices plus VAT in Nov 2006

Why go anywhere else ?

not seen the car yet (just spoke to the garage). its the length that runs under the floorpan that needs replacing.

from the EPC it appears it could be A1244202828 (£11.73)

this goes from the adaptor to the T-piece..

or there is A1234207128 (£33.80) which comes out of the hydraulic unit (ABS) to the adaptor.

If its the 1st bit i will go the dealer route

if its the 2nd bit i will go the motor factor route

if anyone can confirm which bit runs the length of the floorpan (ie all depends where the adaptor is) today i could order it up from the dealer today which would be handy....

just had a look on my other E300D estate and cant see the adaptor - i suspect it may be hidden under some plastic encapsulation....

cheers!!!
