Did I get an OK deal on my used c class coupe?

Hey all

Excited to be back to Mercedes. I just like how everything works in these cars; they feel "right" to me.

I was wondering your opinion how I did for what I paid as I'm actually downgrading in an attempt to save my money for long term investment plans instead of wasting thousands on newer, faster cars and changing my mind too much. How very sensible of me, I know. (Used to own a Lexus RC F, but have also owned a CLA shooting brake and that's what got me into Merc). This time I am sticking to my guns and want the car to last.

Anyhoo I got myself a coupe 2.1 C220 CDI AMG Sport Edition G-Tronic+ Euro 5, from 2014, with 99830k miles on the clock for £8850.

Fell in love with the interior quality and ease of driving feel on the c class coupe (I like it comfortable and effortless). Hoping with lots of care and attention from myself I can keep and run this car for a long time despite the slightly high mileage. I tried an SLK but it did not feel as comfortable.

Details:
Black paint bodywork is very good for age, few stone chips on bonnet as expected. Tiniest ding on the side door, but I can barely see it, from a car park door. Windscreen is peppered with tiny stone chips, will probably get that replaced as it will annoy me when washing it! It's pan roof, heated seats, adapted headlight thingy, rear camera (but I was disappointed no guidelines on the camera and it's bit poor vision), some electric seat, but no memory, parking sensors, dab, half leather half alcantara(?) soft fabric which I preferred.
It has "full" service history - it's been serviced regularly but last 3 years were at a local garages and so I don't think it fully follows Merc's recommendations, something I shall make sure is attended to and have put a service plan spreadsheet together already. Before that, full MB servicing.
It's got new tyres from last year but they are a budget brand, annoyingly. Break pads and disc seem ok, tiny lip on fronts, prob last a year. Calipers visually look like they could do with a refurb, blue paint is a bit wishy washy.
It probably hasn't had the automatic transmission fluid changed, another thing I shall see to ASAP. I think it could do with a wheel alignment, feeling the tiniest of left drift on the motorway. MOT seemed fairly tidy.

So how did I do? I personally reckon I did about average. I had a budget of 9k. I could have shopped for months trying to find the perfect perfect example but I suppose I am slightly too impatient for that. It's difficult to find a car with everything tickety-boo at this mileage and budget, right? Have you managed to get a good deal? Do you think these cars are great bang for buck? I couldn't bring myself to own anything less refined as a does-it-all Merc, especially as MPG was really important for me as I do *at least* 12k a year.

And let me know if you have any thoughts on anything I should look out for at this mileage. There's a good specialist near me I will get a quote for the transmission and I may ask them to do a look over the car for me, fingers crossed they're good and willing to do that sort of thing and give me quality recommendations.

That’s a handsome car congratulations. Transmission service would be a good idea if no evidence that it’s been done recently. Both MSL Performance in Birmingham and Mercland in Nuneaton are specialists within sensible distance of Kenilworth, and both enjoy an excellent reputation.

Thank you - I've seen some bad reviews of car sales at Mercland upon further investigation (seems like they don't bother to sort the car out until people decide they want to buy, just seems a little odd to me to try to sell a car to people when it has things wrong on it, almost as if they'd only be willing to do the minimum?) and don't feel I can trust them based on this, but I have found "Autohaus Werkshoppe" that has good reviews in Coventry which is even closer to me than Bham or Nuneaten so I may give them a call.

Nice car.....I cant comment on the price.....but possibly checking if the price was fair BEFORE purchase might be considered the right way of going about things!!!:) Great looking car though!!

(Sorry I am struggling to figure out how quotes work on this forum)
Obviously if I wasn't happy with the price I wouldn't have paid it but I am simply wondering others opinions needlessly. :)

Click the 'quote' button at lower RHS of post, then the 'insert quote' button beneath the writing space for your intended post and again when prompted and it will work as per this post.

You can 'enter' the quote and click and begin writing to add a sentence within the quote. This can be done as often as required. Eg as below....

It would be good to get it inspected by a specialist sooner rather than later to see if there are any problems. The OM651 engine does have its problems but at least you don't have the dreaded adblue system. Ask the specialist to have a good look at the rear subframe.

Testing testing! I think I cracked it, thank you!

I shall ask for the specialist to take a look when I get the transmission done, then. I know the timing chain can go and to look out for an engine rattle on cold start up but to be honest I don't really trust myself to know and identify that as I am not very good with engine sounds. What other OM651 things should I look out for?

Just rang Mercedes Stratford to get a quote on ATF and told I have two recalls to sort as well - airbag and a diesel engine update, not sure what the diesel one is about. 🤔

You might want to avoid the diesel engine one. It's the infamous emissions update. You'll find it won't go into top until over 70. Holds gears longer too so you lose some mpg. Have a search on here - there's a few comments about the emissions update.

I was just researching this!!! What is the emissions update aiming to do from Mercedes side? How does holding gears longer create less emissions? Confusing. Thank you I will read up some more.

Ask the dealer about the engine one - chances are it is the emissions update, but it could be something else.

The airbag recall covers a huge number of MBs ... can usually be done while you wait if the car isn't in for any other work. Took about 15 mins on our Vito.

I think it's something to do with maintaining heat which then allows the emissions systems to work better - something like that. You'll see in the forum there are more details. Mine was updated by accident during some other work and it made it noticeably less nice to drive. And the top gear thing was annoying at first though you can just flick it up with the flappy paddles. Quite used to it now.

What infotainment system does the car have?

I don’t think it will be half leather and alcantara, will be man made stuff, and microfibre, some find it better then the real stuff.
