Diesel Turbo BLown and engine won't shut off ?

Hi All .....

This may be a tad off topic but its started to worry me ?

A friend with a Rover 45 Diesel Turbo and as of today a friend with a Jaguar (mondeo) Turbo diesel both suffered blown turbos and even though they had the keys in their hands the engines kept running on sump oil evidently ? They both managed to STALL their engines after the initial shock wore off but the Jaguar managed to ruin its engine as well causing what will be a hefty bill !

I have a E320 (w210) CDI and it has the 4matic automatic gearbox.

What I'm wondering is there any chance if my turbo blows will it do the same and if so how do I stall it ?

Any ideas chaps ???

Highly unlikely to happen, but it has in the past.

Don't worry about it too much as there is little you can do if it does happen

Oh dear ..... all I could think of was clamping up the oil feed to turbo assuming it has a flexible pipe ...

I did think cut the pipe but ... that would be a tad risky with all that lovely hot oil flowing ....

So bye bye Engine and Turbo .....

Any tell tale signs to watch/listen for or is there a known life expectancy for these turbos?

Mines done 107,000 miles ...

Ok and its uk spec Rhd
When I bought it I was told it had a 4matic gearbox from your comment renault12ts maybe it's not ?

The same thing happened to one of my vans, sucked the engine sump dry and then seized.
 
Oil pipe to and from the turbo are rigid AFAIK.

Keep the oil changes regular. Turbo's are generally quite reliable and catastrophic failure, although not uncommon, is rare.

107k? Barely run in! Lots of members cars on here are 150k, 200k+ with no problems

As for 4Matic - you may have a badge on the rear tailgate or, I think, it should be stated on the log book. The Russian site should be able to tell you too - http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/favourites/27571-enter-vin-get-car-details.html
 
It is a rare occurance on the 320cdi for this to happen.
 
I have heard that the only way to stop an auto, would be to block the air intake. Having seen the youtube video's, it would take a braver person than me to go this near a motor which is feasting on it's oil....
 
Yes, blocking the intake with a large piece of wood and NOT your hands is a possible way of stopping the engine!

Not recommended! If you are unlucky enough for your engine to do this, then the only thing you should contemplate is getting you and your occupants as far away from the car as possible, as quickly as possible. Putting you, or any part of you, in proximity to a time bomb is not a good idea!

As far as 4matic goes, if its a RHD car, then it's RWD and not 4matic. End of!

but, on your vehicle i doubt you have to worry about this happening. its quite rare in reality.

Probably not. 4matic is Mercedes 4 wheel drive, as seen on the back of MLs etc, but not on a W210 e class.
 
There was an extensive thread on this recently, and from it my conclusions were:
While still in the car, try and stall it (if a manual).
As per above post, and assuming concern great enough to be carrying a CO2 extinguisher, direct that into the air intake.
If none of the above viable - get well out of the way! You have no more than a couple of minutes if it's going to explode.

I'll put a co2 in the car, that sounds a good option ....

Having two mates have the same problem just got me a tad paranoid ....

Bills had the estimate for his jaguar (mondeo) £3200 + vat
for 2nd hand engine but new turbo inc fitting, fluids etc ......
not the sort of thing we need at CHRISTMAS time or any time come to that ....

oh i said to him to get the clutch checked at the same time ....but the language from him I would never put on here .... :eek: !!!

I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH HOW BAD IT IS TO OPEN THE BONNET ON A RUNAWAY ENGINE!!!!

In a previous job I was testing oil and breather systems and had quite a few runaway engines. We had slicer valves on the air intake which shut off the air supply.

I know exactly what to do and how to do it, but if my diesel car was "Running Away" and I couldn't stop it by leaving it in gear and stopping I would just walk away and let it explode.

Block the intake with your hand and you could easily lose your fingers.

Use a bit of card and it WILL suck it in and devour it like a piece of tissue.

In seconds it can go from running normally on oil to revving its butt off and throwing a rod or 6 out the block.

So, if you think its running away, hazards on, stop in gear, if that fails then keys out of the ignition and just walk away to the rear of the vehicle.
