Diesel update, do or don’t?

Hi people, now being a proud owner, of an E350 coupe, which I’ve owned for a week, there is an outstanding recall, contacting MB, it turns out, that it needs steering column check, passenger airbag and the dreaded diesel update, should I tell them no to the update, thanks for any help.

I think you can tell them not to do any updates while in for the recall, trouble is if admin get it wrong and do the update it can be undone.
Has anyone had the update and not noticed any issues ?

During my last service the dealer did a sneaky Diesel Update after being told not to do it !
I wasn't very happy with that, especially as the car then threw up an EML. Turned out that they had to change the NOx sensor to comply with the Update (you'll find on the MB site that they promise to change the sensors if that is required by the update).

Anyway, they ended up giving me free service after much discussion (they tried to convince me that the update was mandatory (not true, see MB site).

I've noticed no difference since it was carried out, except maybe it now uses less Adblue !

Update, thanks for the comments, the car is booked in at Taunton MB on the twelfth of September, I have told the operator that I do not want the software update, I’ll just have the airbag and steering column check, when I am there I will speak to the tech and get it in writing.

I had the update on my S205 250 March 2020 at about 50,000 miles on the clock Its just passed 90,000 One difference is the Adblue shows a lower range -7100 miles till fill instead of 12,000 after a full fill. My trips are mainly 250-350 miles on motorways. I record every journey and refill and have noticed a slight improvement in mpg! The Adblue dash readout drops 100 mile in range for every 300 miles travelled so I am getting a better range from the Adblue tank.
If I need to top up I only use the Adblue pump at my local Esso filling station. Have heard about problems with Adblue stored on garage forecourts in full sun and problems from using old stock or using leftover partial bottles to top up.

I have probably cursed my car now.

Yesterday I emptied the adblue tank, filled with fresh, purchased that day with next year‘s date on it, removed and cleaned out the adblue injector, cleaned out the port in the exhaust, which was pretty blocked.

It's a personal choice and, having had the car from new, mine was that I didn't want it done. My local dealer belongs to the same group as yours and initially they tried to sell it to over the phone me as a 'positive'. I made it very clear that I didn't want it.

When I dropped it off at the garage they had already noted on the file 'no engine software update'. I asked to speak direct with the tech but that wasn't possible as they took it to another of their premises to do it (another story) but said that the tech wouldn't do it as it wasn't listed as a job. However, I'd already stuck a damn great note over the speedo and another above the glovebox and left them there. It looked a little OTT but couldn't be missed or misinterpreted.

To be fair to them, they did say that lots of customers didn't want it and they accepted that.

Thanks for that, it does put my mind at rest, I think I will leave notes like you did, just to be sure, I will definitely want to see it in writing though.
