After much cursing the water pump is back on and all hoses done.
Big thanks to KennyN for sending down some bits to help me with the snapped screw.

But now there is (possibly) a different problem.

There doesn’t seem to be an obvious bleed screw to get rid of trapped air.

I left the coolant expansion cap off, started the car, put the heating on and let it run.

The fan came on, but -
there was no heating inside the car,
the coolant expansion is still cold and
there was no drop in the amount of coolant in the tank.

I’m positive I flushed it all out but I only put back in about 9 litres.

The water pump, thermostat, temp sensor, belt and pulleys were all changed.
Am I missing something, or is there something else going on.

It’s a 1998 C280 V6

Cheers

No bleed screw that I remember, used to have to just hold the revs up at about 3000 rpm with the cap on, it will eventually push the air round and heat will come through.

Or leave it over night with the cap off and see if it drops down.

Some of the modern cooling systems need vacuum bleeding to properly remove all the air:

Modern cooling system?

Yeah I’m leaving it off overnight as you said. For the heating I’m also looking at the possibility of the duo valve as it’s come up on the diagnostics.
