s600 w220
Hi all
I have traded my 126 in and got a w220.
Choose best example I could find but it is without distronic.
I would really like to install, has anyone done a retrofit?

Okay forgot the important bits, its a 2002 s600! ie w220178

That would be the n/a version rather than turbocharged version?

I agree with Jay's sentiments.

At a guess, the parts alone would probably be 1/5th of the price that you paid for the car (if a normally aspirated version).

You don't need it - save the funds for any ABC problems or, god forbid, the oil cooler deciding to leak.

Ive done a retrofit on a SL. The 2002 will need
a) Loom
b) Switch Pack
c) Control Unit
d) Distronic sensor behind the grille
e) New front grille

I'd look out for the parts (except the wiring loom) on eBay by searching regulalrly. The control unit and sensor are expensive (ie £hundreds) - I have a spare controller somewhere, but would have to check it was right for the car

If you PM me your VIN number I am happy to work out if we can get any parts at a sensible price

Cheers

Richard

Newbie

Hi I have sent you an e-mail but it may not go as I am a newbie on this web, was always on others mb sites with my w126 but not this one.
Anyway, if you do not get it will I be able to reply to something if you send to me?

need it

You are quite right I probably do not need it, but it would be nice. As for price of car, well it was a steal- and in great condition so its a much higher percentage!
I am not afraid of the electronics though, or the repair bills as I will do the work myself, although have to confess when it comes to stripping out a dash would probably prefer some one with expierience to do it as it saves tabs getting broken!
I have driven shed loads of mileage on motorways and have almost died three times when tired and missed vehicles slowing in front for a few seconds. I do leave large gaps so have had leeway but distronic would have provided that little bit of extra warning, or at least I choose to beleive that!

The details of Richard above was who I was thinking of re the voice control from the other thead so may be worth asking him about it.

The cars can be had for absolutely nothing....but for a good reason! The current owner of my old S600L is not a member here but otherwise would have asked for a selection of invoices to be posted to show the running costs to keep one in top condition.

Interesting re the DISTRONIC and braking suddenly - does anyone know what it does? I thought it simply sounds an alarm?

I cannot remember the car (I think it is the current series of LS) that will monitor front and rear and in the event of the car in front coming to a complete stop, will calculate the braking needed to try and minimise the risk of avoiding the car in front only to have the car at the back drive straight into you and, if possible, 'manage' the collision if no other option (so take a 20mph hit front and rear rather than 0 front and 40mph to the rear) to maximise the chances of all occupants in the various cars to survive.

Witchcraft level maths at work!

The distronic i have it fitted to mine is a wonder. Its also frightening and i dont use it much.
Basically you set it to 70mph and it cruises at that speed. If something brakes in front it brakes for you or follows the car at whatever speed it is doing to maintain the set gap.
That i find ok and nice.
What is frightening is when the car doing say 50 moves and a gap appears, the distronic then belts it 500 bhp to 70 mph then stops with you doing nothing.
It feels like your not incontrol of 500bhp. Then imagine 30 to 70 mph.

I can only imagine.

The first time I drove a biturbo (and had the n/a V12 at the time so not exactly slow) I was amazed at the acceleration. It felt like the car only weighed 1000kg!

The acceleration on an S65L must be astonishing and...and on a Veyron, beyond words
