I bought some windows for the house in 2002 with a ten year 'insurance backed guarantee'

Since then it has been found that the windows no longer perform to their original requirements eg, not closing and sealing properly, the UPVC has distorted etc etc.

I now find that the company went 'bust' in 2004/5 and have been told that I should have been issued with a certificate of insurance for the guarantee.

Sadly I was never supplied with one, not being familiar with the correct procedure.

Do I have any redress with the company or its former directors / owners?

Sadly for you, you do not. The directors/owners liability is basically limited to losing their investment (hence Limited Company). That is why having an insurance backed guarantee is always recommended.

Thanx CJ, suppose its my fault for not getting hold of the certificate before handing over the final payment!!
Still, you would have expected them to hand it over as a matter of routine.

Sorry to hear of your woes fella.
I'll lay money it's recycled UPVC - it just doesn't stand up to scrutiny over time.

So I'll stump up another umpteen thousand to replace 'em then!!

Any recommendations ??

Anglian are ok too - agreed everest do make quality units. Ask everest about the version they make for the BAA scheme because they really are the best.

Franey, if you are going to puchase some new windows, why not have a read of THIS previous forum thread. ;)

A little story.

A few years ago, i had a "mate" who was always after a fast buck, he was always changing this and that jobs.
The job he has had the longest (im sure he is still at it) is selling windows and doors. I used to cringe hearing the stories of the "stupid people" he was ripping off.
In the 4 or 5 years he worked for them (while i still knew him,) the company had closed down twice and had done many times before hand, meaning they did not stick to the (lies/promises) they made to customers and kept people deposits for work they did not complete/do.
they would then re-open the company with a slightly different name but with all the same workers.
The boss of the company came to our pub one night, he was one of the flashest/full of himself knobs i have come across but he was soon put right by myself and a couple of others.
My "friend" who worked for him was not best pleased with his boss getting a boot up the **** to help him on his way out, (think this maybe part of the reason my "friend" is no more:).)

Because of knowing him and hearing the "stories," when i had my windows replaced, i only called companies that had been established for many years. I ended up using a single local company/shop that had been established for 30 odd years.
I was/am more than happy with the work they did, the price they gave me compared to other companies and getting them to come around and fix a problem a few years later was no problem at all.
