Do you tell your insurance company of mods?

As per the title do you or don't you tell your insurance company of mods on your car, wether its engine or Aestheics?:dk:

Yes 100% always. You have a major crash with undeclared mods and you can potentially lose all you have (inc house) if the insurance company comes after you.

Yes. Can't see the point of withholding material information.

I do, because if you don't then you might as well not bother with insurance at all. Insurance companies are so picky these days to try to wrangle out of paying up that they are bound to find out if you have a serious prang and it is modified in any way. If they find out after the event that you did not declare something then they record it on the insurers database, which will make it nigh-on impossible (expensive) to get insurance in your name in future.

This should be a poll really.

My answer - yes absolutely, all of the mods we have are declared.

Pointless having a poll since I can't see anyone stupid enough to vote no.

I'm never clear about what is classified as a mod. My car was factory fitted with a Sebring sports exhaust and AMG alloys, which I declare. However, I don't declare the sunroof, ventilated seats, 4 zone climate etc..

Is this correct?

I think the above posts answer your question, even a job change can alter your premium.

No, because I don't have any mods, but had my car been modified, I would have definitely declared it.

In fact I did call them before comandonline retrofitted COMAND in my car - and Aviva said that there's no need to declare entertainment or satnav upgrades.

I'm just curious as to what you guys declare. As I know some of my friends do declare aesthetic mods eg. Alloys, lights.... We're as I have a pal who has uped his bhp by about 100 but has said nothing to the insurers.

exactly.

material non disclosure means that you have paid for insurance, but have no insurance.

I told mine (Oak) about my remap and delimit. Just noted their records, no charge.

Guess their thought process was along the lines of "if he's a big enough idiot enough to do 155 on the public road (which I'm not), and has a crash, then what's another 20-30mph in the big scheme of things"

Heated seats, parktronic, storage pack, interior lighting pack, split-fold rear seats....do you really have to list all of these things?

Some people may turn a blind eye to upgraded alloys (especially if they are original and the same size or where available as an option from new).

Even more of a grey area with a used car, what was standard vs what was an upgrade (factory or retrofit) becomes trickier.

An excellent question that nobody has clearly answered, yet one to which I'd also like an answer. When I insured my new C350 Sport at the end of March this year I wasn't asked if I had any options such as those listed above so wasn't able to tell them. I guess the real question is what do the insurance companies consider to be the difference, if any, between options and modifications? But perhaps I am fully covered because I did have to declare the car's value, which I gave as the list price INCLUDING all the options.

Some insurers ask for all options. Some ask for those not fitted when new.

My understanding is that factory spec is classed as standard.

Ask on here for the datacard (from the VIN number) which shows what it was built with at the factory.
