Do you think this tyre is repairable? What would you do?

Hi all,

I have a pair of 1 year old Continental PremiumContact 6 tyres on the front of my W212. I've done under 11k miles on them and there's plenty of tread left on them both.

But.. just found this screw in one of them.

Do you think this is repairable? It's very close to the edge, but it's still on the 'flat' section of the tyre.

I'm asking as the car currently has the space saver on, so I'm trying to decide if there's any chance in hell it's repairable, or if I should just order a tyre online to be fitted. They're about £125 each or about £240 a pair.

If it's NOT repairable, would you just get a replacement one (considering the milage), or would you change both and keep the spare tyre?

I don't really want to spend £240 right now, but I also generally don't mess around with tyres/safety.

Cheers,

Ed

I had a tyre repaired, again almost new and a screw in a similar place. Iirc paid about £35 for an insert and for it to be “ vulcanised” ?.. it lasted for a good few years on our Clk320.

based on a similar experience I doubt many tyre shops will repair as it is too close to the edge.

I’d replace both front tyres...as they are responsible for steering and the majority of breaking..

Hopefully braking and not breaking!

Too close to the edge I think. If there is 6mm or more I would buy a similar one and use it until they wear out. If not, replace the pair and keep the good one as a pair.

If it were mine I'd plug it. Only as I don't do motorway miles , if I did I'd replace the tyre.

I think your very question gives you the answer you are probably thinking about.

IF, if you did find someone to repair it, are you married with a family and would you put 100% faith in the repair or say, "My family is worth more than the cost of a new tyre"

I hate smart alecs that are great at coming out with hind-sight. Far, far better to NOT be in the position of ...... "IF ONLY I HAD NOT REPAIRED THAT TYRE!"

With motor-bikes we have a saying, 'Cheap helmet, cheap head!'

Thanks all. I will get new tyre(s).

The second question is, is it really worth changing a pair, after 11k miles? There is 5mm of tread left.

Most people I know would call it OCD, but they are not car people and probably fit ditch finders.

Cheapest I've found is quick fit cyber monday deal, 2 for £222.50 (vs 1 for £125)

Might be worth getting tyre insurance , a 1p screw is expensive against a £125 tyre .
