Do you think this tyre is repairable? What would you do?

I wouldn't think its worth changing both, if the other tyre is as good as the punctured one then its doesn't need replacing, no one changes their tyres with 5mm tread remaining as its perfectly serviceable. Would you change them both if they were not punctured after 11k miles ?

Just replace the damaged one, no need to replace anymore than that.

No but the point being that having identical characteristics across the axle is favourable (same tread depth hence identical aquaplaning resistance etc?) Not a tyre expert by any means but I believe that is the thought process behind it, also when the older tyre is at the limit (1.6mm) to be replaced the new one will still have +4.6mm remaining so what would you do then? :) if you just replace the older one then you’d have to go back to the tyre shop again another time when the other wears out and vice versa. I change in pairs for that reason.

Agreed it can be argued that it’s slightly over the top though.

The point is you save yourself £125 and although as you say will need to be changed again in the future, but he might only do 5,000 miles a year and could last another 3 years or more. He will no doubt replace with the same make and size.
Are all your 4 tyres above 5mm, are you at risk of aquaplaning, do you replace tyres well before the wear markers ?

I think I agree with your last sentence though.

I’d replace them as a pair and sell the other 5mm one on eBay :)

If you usually change them @ 3mm it only has 2mm left anyway :thumb:

Thanks all. I decided to order two new tyres and keep the current one as a spare.

It's really bad timing personally for a variety of reasons, but my OCD over something like this would be too much to deal with. I half came here wanting you guys to convince me, and you did...

I used AsdaTyres and found a local fitter for ~£226 - I just hope they don't butcher my wheels taking them off/on...

Thanks again,

Ed

My point was not about changing tyres at 5mm though, it was about having equal tread and hence the same aquaplaning characteristics across the axle? 😂

I guess your right, its bad enough to encounter aquaplaning in the first place, but to alter the characteristics would be asking for trouble

To be fair he’d not really be saving £125 in the long term. £125 is for one tyre, it was £222.50 for both. So it’s only £97.50 extra for that second one :)

Then remember that’s for a new tyre. He only has 5mm left, so if you change tyres @ 3mm that’s only 2mm of wear remaining.

Approx 8mm when new so the current tyres are 60% worn (40% remaining). Give or take - depends how low you like to leave them.

So by changing them early as a pair it’s cost him less than £40 in usable wear, but he either gains a reasonable spare tyre for future use if he needs it or stick in on ebay and you’ll probably get £30/40 back anyway.

Man maths ;)

The best thing though is he gets to drive on fresh tyres sooner and gets a nice new pair for the weather at this time of year which can’t be a bad thing in anyone’s book

Fair comment,
So he could have saved himself £100,
He has 5mm left if he changed at 2mm he could still have 11,000 miles left ( 2 years for me)
Half worn tyre =£50, prob never refit as cost £20 for balancing and hassle and not same depth as other side etc,
Charges and paypal postage on Ebay maybe clear £25,
Total nett cost £75.
Could have bought himself North Face coat in the sales.

Wet winter, just take your time and be more assertive.

P. S don't dare look at the rears :D

I’m not going to spend time replying further as the OP has made his mind up anyway :)

Screw it out like W1ghty said above ,,it may not go far enough in to the tyre as to puncture it You will see if you take it out, that its only 1/4 long you never know

Thanks - but unfortunately it is letting air out, I noticed it due to the TPMS alert

There is an ‘undamaged and unrepaired’ tyre on eBay with 5mm tread but I chickened out of buying a used tyre... not sure if that’s reasonable or not, but I don’t know much about used tyres...
