Looking around at some of these double DIN units, some with full 7" touch screens - I have two questions...

1. Will they fit into my ML (W163) where a Comand would fit
2. None of the specs mention removing the fascias for security...do they come off?

You will need an adapter, but it should fit.

Most double din units do not have a removable facia, it is assumed that they are not worth nicking because fitment is limited to only a few vehicles.

I had one in my W203, it was recessed into the facia, and would be hard to remove quickly, so no oppertunist would bother to try and get it out, it would take to long to remove it without damaging it! ;)

Thanks for the reply. Where do the adaptors come from?

But COMANDs get nicked??

The dealership I got my new Vito from apparently fit a Panasonic (?) double DIN unit in a lot of the vehicles they sell.

Most good ICE dealers should have them in stock, but if not they will order you one!

Mine actually had the divider to enable fitment of 2 single din units, so I had to remove the divider with a sharp craft knife.

No probs though, coz you cannot see the cut when the double din is fitted into it. ;)

Hi,

Got this double din from the US - Ebay...Took a lot of seaching to find one that fitted flush with this unit.

I have a friend over there that brought it back. It's not a perfect fit but alot nicer than the one that Pioneer wanted to supply.

....and the gear knob...want one of those on my ML too.

(if you don't mind me asking, what was the price? Is it ok with UK discs and radio etc?)

It was only the facia that I got from the US. The unit is a Pioneer HD3-BT. Full European sat nav on hard disc (with uk cameras),10 gigs for auto CD recording, Ipod, DVD/CD/MP3 player, intergrated blue tooth phone, all voice controlled and touch screen. The sound quality is 1000% better than the original Merc Audio 20.

Expensive, I agree. I did look into having a command fitted but then I would still need a separate phone intergration. Everything about this unit is so much better than the command - That is unless you only want genuine Mercedes in your car...

One other point, when I sell the car I can take it with me, and put the Audio 20 back in it's place...

If any one is interested I have the Mercedes IPOD connector to sell...

Cheers

There was another guy asking the Double din question last night, your looks super,I must find the post and link it

Was it me again?.....'nice way to fill space in ml dash' :)

At the end of the day its all about budget, the one merc07 has is Pioneers top of the range model AVIC-HD3BT costing £1,599.99 and has a 30gb hard drive as well as lingatronic :

I wonder how the device gets the weather info, it appears to know if it should show clouds on the sky :)

In a W210 yes because the comand Double Din was an original factory option. In a W202 some DIY work may be needed I believe someone from here did this with there W202 where they chopped the trim pieces and joined them togethor to make a double din space

Remember that those dash panels can cost nearly £200 from the stealers!

Blimey !

I guess the pioneer unit would be a lot less hassle (I use this term loosely) to fit and has more functions than comand
