I thought today that my driving in fog today was very careful in my van today around the Bicester area on A43, Doing no more than 50mph on the dual carriage ways, when i heard on the news that a HGV had completely missed the junction on the A41 and drove straight through a Island and closed the road. i thought he must have been going to fast like alot of idiots and then about 2 mins later i nearly did the same, only going 35ish as it was a bit pea soup and withing seconds the roundabout was on me and im skidding towards it, dont ask me how but i managed to get the van to steer round and all was well apart from my heart going 200mph, i was so thankfull no one was on the roundabout at the time.

It just goes to show you can never be to carefull, on all my travels today in the fog there was so many idiots still going 70 + in thick pea soup.

And on the news crashes everywhere.

Both you and the HGV were going too fast for the conditions.

I've driven in fog where I literally couldn't see the edges of the road. I had to stop to read road signs.

I bet you forgot to put your sunglasses on.

Couldnt believe the number of people this morning driving in fog without any lights on.

What part of 'only drive as fast as you can see and stop' did you miss from your training ?

I dont think 35 in a 70 area was driving to fast especially when cars were passing me at 70 + I think i was consentrating so much on the road and any vehicles ahead i actually lost consentration, i know that sounds daft but it happens, I do 70k miles a year and i see it all the time and in fact do it, more so in bad conditions like rain/ fog snow etc, You just get in a zone trying to be carefull and turn off your basic senses

You nearly drove onto a roundabout.

Either you were going too fast or lacking concentration.

Driving in dense fog no matter how well you know the area can only be described as scary as feck:eek::eek:

Very recent early morning trips to London on the M1 are proof of this...

If anyone didn't pick up on Dieselmans Top Tip of the day..

Wear your sunglasses in fog, it really helps.

If you read the my post that you quoted thats what i said, I must have lost consentration by consentrating to much. I think to be honest i was worried about running into the back of someone with no lights on ( lots of them about today )than i was about the road ahead.

You nearly hit a static road feature so, yes, you were travelling too fast for the prevailing conditions.

Then you should have known what a 'pea-souper' meant to your travel..

I still stand by my original comment - drive only as far as you can see and stop.

That dictum was drilled into me by my driving instructor - my father. Who was an Army HGV Driving Instructor.

Making an assumption that any car traveling down the road (with or without lights on) would be going faster than a roundabout, you were going too fast, otherwise how could you avoid a car...which last time I knew, was smaller than a roundabout.

What if you have gangsta window tints and (road-legl) pink tinted headlamp bulbs ?

Should I be wearing Ugg boots ?

I drove into a field in Cornwall once in thick fog.

Yes , I was going miles too fast because I was young , one minute on the road , the next , in a field ... WTF

Lucky it wasn't a dry stone wall

I've nearly done a wall once...no fog, but a Police car behind was making for rapid progress...:D

I blame the Police. What a H&S risk...

If i was to drive any slower some idiot going 70 would have drove straight up my jacksy and knowing my luck it would have been a 40 tonner, Perhaps if councils did not turn off the strret lights there might of been some indication there was a roundabout ahead other than just the signs,

So what you are saying is if you were driving along and suddenly came into a patch of zero visability fog you would just stop and wait for the car behind to smash your car to bits.

I went straight through an open ( thank god ) 5 bar gate on a 90 degree right hand bend.

Tarmac to thick mud in a tenth of a second
