E Class 320cdi Estate
Just swapped my 19mpg BMW 330i Petrol Touring for a 2004 E 320 Cdi Estate in the hope that it would be much cheaper to run.

It's a new car to me, so I've given it the beans a few times, but I'm only getting 19mpg on the readout.

I thought these were around 35 mpg?

Remap? Chip?

Bit more info, where do you live, what sort of driving is that?

These take around 12 miles or 20 minutes to get to full temperature, before that they can be thirsty, but that sounds a bit low.
Remember they are a very heavy cars, so round town the gulp it down, and if you are only doing short (ie sub 12 mile or 20 minutes, whichever is quicker) journeys, then diesel is not ideal.

What temperature is it sitting at? Should be 90ºc, if it is not then it is overfuelling as it thinks the engine is always cold, can be using up to 40% more juice.

Ah yes, good point. Only little journeys so far and I didn't reset it.

Will reset and keep an eye on the temp. Thank you.

While I'm here...

When I open or shut the tailgate there is a Godawful clanking/whirring noise for about 40 seconds after.

It goes eventually, but scares the dog.

Any ideas?

That doesn't sound right, I would check the hinges.

Ooh blimey, what does that mean. Where are the hinges?

Norfolk - lovely. We go to Blakeney every year. Looking forward to the next trip in this big comfy cruiser.

Good idea.

Dog gives me no end of grief.

If you are that worried about mpg its worth working it out properly when you refuel rather than rely on the dash readout! they are not always accurate.

We sometimes have an evening drive out to Blakeney for a meal in the Kings Arms.:thumb:

We are up there all the time, used to have a clothes shop just down the road. Wells is also getting very nice with 3 great pubs on the green now and The Victoria just down the road at Holkham, have to plug that as my brother is the Head Chef there. ;)

Does your car have the electronic boot closure? Big red button on the bottom of the tailgate.
Your not pushing it down are you?

Yes it has the electronic boot closure. It shuts fine but makes the awful noise after it shuts or opens.

Victoria Pub is lovely - had some good grub there.

A bit of a schlep to Wells beach, but love the dunes and the best bit...Chav-free!

Not a bouncy Castle or Souvenir shop in sight.

After the tail gate opens or closes, a motor starts up that raises or lowers the boot cover. You could try pulling the cover so that it is covering the boot area and then open and close the tail gate and see if the noise coincides with the lifting or lowering of the cover.

It's the motor that raises and drop the load cover that makes that noise.

If your cover doesn't raise when you open the boot, it's not attached properly; it should lift/slide up whenever you open the boot.

Is that the straight 6 or V6 engine? I understand the straight 6 is supposed to be more economical, but my 07 V6 manages around 36mpg on a good run without going crazy, 38mpg driving like the wife, or down to 28mpg if I want some fun:thumb:

I had one of these for 4 years and averaged 31mpg over that time.
