One of the front springs on my 55plate Eclass has snapped with 50k on the clock. A couple of questions please:-
  • Is it necessary or advisable to replace both fronts?
  • How easy is it to replace them working of axle stands.....I presume some form of spring compressor is needed.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Best to replace both springs to match rates side to side[ the older spring will be "softer"] Its a relatively easy job to do using the correct special spring compressor and not too expensive since with the right tool it doesn't take much time. It is a much bigger and hazardous job without it. Its a repair best left to the pros with the right equipment imho

I've just had a front coil spring replaced on my W202, £55 for a spring from Mercedes with £40 labour from a local garage.
I had a go at replacing it myself with £15 Draper spring compressor's, gave up after 2.5 hours.
Well worth paying £40 a spring, maybe cheaper for 2 ;)

The front spring on the 211 are easy to replace , the struts will unbolt from the car , 3 13mm nuts on the strut top , and a 21mm nut n bolt through the lower control arm . this will remove the strut , then use a spring clamp toi release the spring tension and unbolt the 17mm shock nut .
