E220 cdi poor performance

Recently bought my 2000 E220cdi manual 3 months ago.
110K with fsh.
Always thought it was a bit sluggish with the problem many owners have had of it not reving past 3000rpm, although at the time I thought that was normal.
The other week the car fired into life and behaved as it should, ie, fast uphill, could overtake safely and reved past 3000rpm. This lasted about 3 weeks then went back to how it was. I have learned recently about the common MAF problem so I unplugged it to find no difference in the performance. I removed it, it was spotless like brand new, I have changed the air filter, applied injector cleaner, removed and cleaned every pipe and sensor I can find. Still no difference, any suggestions???

I saw on one thread a bloke had 17 replies congratiulaing him on fitting his own battery, is a bit of advice too much too ask?

Replace it, don't buy from the dealer, go to a Bosch outlet and purchase from there.

You'll need a tool to remove the MAF from it's holder. I can't remember the size but the bolts are plain to see by just opening the bonnet.

You should leave more time for replies, people have jobs you know :)

It could be the MAF or another issue such as the turbo actuator.

Would be a good idea to have the codes read and the Maf output also, although a play with a meter on Pin 5 should reveal all. Expect approx 2v at idle and 4.2-4.5v at full revs.
When it's faulty a boost gauge might be useful.

If it's a Pierburg MAF you might as well replace it, they are cheaper than having the codes read.

Thanks Dieselman, apprecited.

Where exactly is pin 5 so I can check the voltage against the revs?
How much roughly is a turbo actuator should that turn out to be the culprit?

Pin 5 on the actual MAF connector with respect to Gnd. Just use a small wire trapped into the connector.

The turbo actuator is possibly sticking. It operates the vane ring on the turbo to adjust the amount of boost, there is a bulletin about lubricating it with high temperature oil and grease.

Will check out these recomendations and let you know.
Thanks again.
ps
Is the bulletin regarding lubrication found within the engine forum?

Just explaining what can happen with lunch time post, and some others, they can slip away out of sight within an hour, and some post are too hard to answer for many members.

Many of us do our best to answer all we can
