E220cdi....will I be dissapointed?

I bet you wouldn't.

I tried to buy one and chop mine in against it but the PX value meant I couldn't get into a facelifted E220. Some of us like cars that don't break down and cost thousands to fix. Bar some extra low speed and high speed refinement and a drop in performance I really wouldn't be missing much. Great performing engine the V6 but it does come at a cost.

Set of 18inch sport 211 wheels and some aftermarket springs and I'd have been laughing.

A210 points out youd get a newer car for the same money, whilst the 211 takes miles nicely like all cars the newer and younger the more replacement of perishing parts can be deferred. Spec wise all 211s have all the comforts that you need. I've had two ones minus memory seats and COMAND and really don't care.

Your regular trips to Hoon City would preclude the 220 for you. I think if you bought one after the fun times in your 320 you'd come to regret it.

Honestly not John. Had a ball in my E220.

Reckon bar really brutal overtakes I wouldn't miss my car at all. I only keep it because I can't afford to PX it for something I'd like, and given the three thousand plus its cost in repairs post warranty I am reluctant to move it on.

Previous to my E220 I had a x5 4.4. V8 petrol, nicer than the V6. Went for an E220. Missed the 8 for about a week. Previous to that was an x5 3.0i. Preferred the smaller engine. More power could be used more of the time and it was the sweeter car.

Large engined variants IMHO are really overrated bar the owners IMHO.

Hmmm, methinks you have a 2L something waiting in the wings to be revealed as your next car.

Not in the wings. Awaiting mine to get fixed. Not engine related but you are right. I'll go for a smaller engined car more than likely.

The consensus is that the 220cdi is a lot better than you might think so suggest you try one.

I only have experience of the 320cdi in estate form which I would highly recommend for its performance/economy combination.

I started out thinking I didn't want a Sport but having tried a couple found the ride much better than expected and it grips like its on rails.

If you shop around the Sport tyre cost is not a major issue.

They are all good cars and I suggest you drive a few variants to see what suits you.

Sport really is the only reason to get a 320cdi.

A set of 18 inch wheels and a Blistein B12 pro kit, you can make your 211 220cdi have the handling characteristics of the sport, and some more....

I'd test the 320cdi first, then the 220cdi, and see if the 220cdi feels too big a step down. If you test the other way, you'll be suckered in by the power and maybe not see the bigger picture.

Thanks for the very enlightening replies so far.

Another question if I may...

I saw an e220 with what appear to be child booster seats intergrated into the rear seats which pop up. Is this std kit (doubt it!)...? Thanks

Not standard, they were about £400 as an option iirc.

Option code 248. On the 2007 estate, they were a £205 option in cloth and £275 in leather. See page 78 of the brochure I posted earlier.

I don't have the saloon price list, but here's the estate:

Thanks...sorry, one more thing...

Some cars I've seen advertised as leather, others described as "amtico leather" which is man made leather I think? Seems from the brochure that std apolstury is cloth and amtico, but are leather seat optioned cars actually leather?

Artico. Amtico is kitchen flooring. :D

Leather means leather. If the car has those trademark MB ruched panels in the doors, I believe that indicates natural (if not especially fine or soft) leather; flat door panels go with Artico (synthetic) and/or fabric.

E320 all day long.

An E220 is fine, nice car still, but the E320 is a peach, very refined and the whole experience is completely different.

After 15 years of BMWs, including M cars, I can hand on heart say the W211 estate I had, E320cdi avantgarde, is the best car I have owned.
I am in a W212 E350cdi estate now and still think my old W211 was a better car.
Better is probably not the right word, but it is a 'nicer' all round package on the older car imho. The new one does many things better, but as an all round driving experience I preferred my older car.

I had 535d sport touring, 335i sport tourings, A6 3.2 Quattro Avant and the Merc beats them all.

Just posted some links in your other thread too.

My mileage will be sub 10k per annum, and the difference in economy between the 320 and 220 does not at least on paper seem to be huge. A matter of 4-5mpg only. Is that correct, real world? And I've been trying to figure out what additional std eqpt comes with the 320 over a 220.

I drive a 2007 E320 CDi. I've been driving about in a hired 2008 E220 CDi recently (both Avantgarde), and with fuel consumption, the E220 CDi was only better by 1-2mpg.

A couple of reasons why I think this is, because I generally drove the hire car in a harder way as I was used to the power of the E320. Overtakes, accelerating to NSLs out of villages, getting up to speed on motorway slip roads took a little more effort in the E220.

Coming from an M5 and an RX8, and being used to the power you may be driving the car hard to match the power you were used to, not so much if you bought the E320, and this will probably harm the fuel economy.

Also being a hire car, which had 115,000 miles on the clock, it may not have been maintained as meticilously as mine (it was loaned from a smaller independent firm - not a big one such as Hertz/Avis etc., where their cars are usually not that old) - also felt like it too, air conditioning stank for the first few days I had it (probably been sat around for weeks previously), interior was really creaky - creaks from the door panel, steering column and the dash in general, and I could tell that it's been smoked in. Getting back in my E320 183,000 miler felt like it was being in a new car again! My car felt "lighter" and driving it again, felt like it could really fly. Also the interior in the hire car looked very tired, and the leather on the driver's seat was much more smoother and felt well worn.

Anyway, minor differences between the two, I noted were the 16" wheels (17" on mine), the door panels on the back - mine has storage compartments/ashtrays, while the E220 just had a mesh grille, and the centre console, while both had the UHI phone connector, mine splits in the middle to reveal an upper tray (where the phone sits), and a bigger, deeper lower tray. The hire car just had one big compartment and the phone sits upright on the rear "wall" of the compartment. E220 had a smaller fuel tank than mine, 65 litres/80 litres if I recall from the brochure. I also noticed that the E220 didn't come with headlamp wash. Mine does. Not sure if any/all of the differences were due to the fact that it was an E220/E320, or the difference in model year perhaps 07/08? (though mine could have been an 08, as it was registered in September 2007).

Didn't think the E220 CDi was a bad car, didn't really feel underpowered - just that the E320 CDi is faster in comparison, and as I'm used to driving it the way it is, the MPG in the E220 suffered. Being a hire car in not as good as shape as mine didn't help either - there was evidence particularly in the back that it has been used as a Saturday night minicab, and it probably was.

My previous car had them.
Regarding the artico/leahter, WillDeBeest is right, the door panels will be "ruffled" (as in the picture), which is nice to squish your elbow into, whereas artico will be flat. Also you can see in the pic that it has rear side airbags which indicates why the ruffled bit has a "split" in the middle.

E320cdi was a car I could have kept forever and never felt the need to change.
I know for a fact that would not have been the case with the E220cdi.

Whereas my experience has been the same, except it's the E220 that I'd hang on to (and would do if the current contract wasn't coming to an end...). I've never felt the need for more grunt (and that's different to want) in either saloon or estate versions.

My dad still misses his E320cdi he sold me..... the longest car he ever kept.

I don't 'need' the grunt it has, I didn't 'need' to fit a Brabus D6 to give more grunt..... but it nice to know its there.

Your only way it to try both as you need to be happy.
