E240 Gearbox locked

Hello folks would appreciate your learned guidance before I head to the garage.

Out in the car earlier and I stopped and turned the engine off for about 2 minutes on restart I could not get the selector out of park, only by inserting a pen into the release mechanism on the selector could I get the car into gear to get home.

Being as it's almost 4pm on a Saturday and my indie has closed for the day what's the likely diagnosis?

Just prior to the incident the ESP/BAS light came on and I had the brake light switch changed 3 days ago, not sure if that is related or is the problem likely to be more serious around gearbox ecu's?

I will get the car onto a star machine on Monday

Was a genuine brake light switch fitted? And did you Indy fit it?

Yes genuine mb switch and it was fitted by the garage, way above my pay grade in mechanics

just an update, garage diagnosed brake switch at fault, ordered one from MB and they delivered a wing mirror (go figure) hopefully sorted by Friday

You might have been right, my indie was offered 6 different switches by MB Bath, it took them some detective work to work out which one is the correct one. Car back and so far no problems.
