Hi All,

I have got a 1997 250 Diesel at the mo (non turbo) that i think is very sluggish.. yes i know the non turbo's are sluggish, but this one is very very sluggish...

I remember that in Mitsubishi Shogun owners circles, they often turn down the diesel pump for emissions reasons for an MOT.. Turning it back up makes it go twice as fast..

Was just wondering if there is any adjustment like this on the 250 engines?

Or anything else anyone can think of?

Cheers

Jay

If it's an auto then it sounds like its running properly.

It is possible that the fuelling has been reduced but I bet it hasn't. The fuelling can be increased by adjusting the rack limit ont he end of the pump.

Alternatively you could always chuck a turbo onto it.:D

Cheers mate, where is the pump on this, is it near the fuel tank or is it something i can do on the driveway??!

250 diesel is slow as , especially in the 210 body.

good luck :) its a taxi in nice clothes :D

I currently have a 190 2.5 in at the moment and its an auto and whilst I acknowledge that its smaller/lighter than a W124, it does not come across as being painfully slow (ok, it certainly no rocket!)...makes me wonder whether your 2.5 has got the throttle linkage set up correctly

Hi jaymanek,
Is the vehicle painfully slow when compared directly with a like for like vehicle, or is it slow compared to the published 'making progress' figures :) :)???

John

Well i havent had a 250 before so cant tell, but its like the old W123 -240 diesels... and im sure this should be more responsive, its almost dangerous trying to overtake...

Thanks for taking my post in the spirit it was meant. I would very tactfully suggewst you try to get a base figure just to let you know how bad, or otherwise your car is.

Hopefully it will not be too serious and eaily resolved.

Good luck,
John

If I am looking at the correct engine (5 cylinder non turbo) the details given are 113 BHP with a 0-60 time of 15.2 seconds.

If it is running a bit below par then things could get grim!

hmm, think ill have to time it now... Maybe its me... Last few weeks ive been driving an S500 and an S600 so maybe thats something to do with it...

:D :D I can understand exactly where your coming from.

It is always best to try the easiest options first. Your diesel is designed to enable you to enjoy the journey and not the time it takes to complete it. :D :D

Regards,
John

Our old sadly departed C250 was not that sluggish, particulalry when wound up, you had to think about overtaking, the difference of the C270 that replaced it is unbelievable though.

Would get it checked, but you could have been spoilt with those high powered S classes lol

The pump is at the front n/s ide of the engine. Personally I wouldn't bother doing anything as I'm sure it's as it's meant to be.

Not to put oo fine a point on it, you won't be bothering to use a Gtech meter when timing this car, more likely an egg timer.:D

A propane injection kit will give it a little more pep! :D

Thats a seriously slow car, I once drove a ssangyong with the 2.9 non turbo diesel mercedes engine, it was a manual nearly new and if yoy didn't red line it in 1st it would bog down when you changed to 2nd, dangerous I'd say!!

:D I'm surprised Satch has not picked up your spelling mistake. Don't you mean 'pop' instead of 'pep'? :) :)

Have a nice day

I had been considering going to a dual fuel (in the sense of running on a mix) Diesel/LPG setup for my Land Cruiser and whilst it looks promising in terms of giving extra power with reduced fuel consumption, lower exhaust pollution & lower running costs not sure the technology is mature enough yet.

And yes John, overcook it and you could well get things to go pop.

If it is slow you want, many years ago I used to work for Ford. The slowest car I drove consisted of a vile green Ford Escort 1.1 designed to get within the Government Motability rules of the day. On grounds of "safety" someone decided it was obvious that the potential users could not possibly cope with the raw and untamed power of a mighty 1.1 litre engine and would not want to go far or fast anyway. So it needed to be detuned from a tyre shredding 50 bhp!

Slush box auto was fitted along with power steering that could be operated by those with limited arm strength and overpowered brakes because users might have limited leg strength.

The road to hell is indeed paved with good intentions. Utterly horrible, slow beyond belief and when eventually up to 50 or so (would see 70mph only downhill) you wanted to slow up because the steering was so twitchy. No ABS so could lock the wheels up if you sneezed. Took it from Warley to Dunton, left it there and got a lift back. Could still be there to this very day next to an Edsel as a dire warning to designers .

i would suggest to look at intake air temp sensor :) if its oily, then take the plug away ant put 10kOHM resistor ant try then :)

Not sure if Jay will have the car now as the thread is two years old. Infact i think he has a slightly faster E class now, Only slightly though...
