Hi,

I own a Mercedes E270cdi (W211), I had a problem yesterday, where the car would not engage in drive or reverse. Although the instrument panel would recognise that the gears are changing, the car would not move from the spot. Just accelerate as if it was in neutral. Does anybody know what the problem could be, and a possible fix?

Regards
Zak

What is the mileage, and has it ever had the fluid changed?

Sounds terminal to me. If you are handy with the spanners yourself remove the sump pan and have a look for metal filimgs and burnt atf fliud. Also make sure the linkage is still connected up when the sum pan is off.

Has someone disconnected your propshaft for a joke ! ;)

Seriously, hope you get it sorted. Not a snapped prop coupling/driveshaft or something silly is it?

Will

Thanks, if there is metal filimgs and burnt atf fliud does this mean that the gearbox has gone?.. dont think it is some prank... As it works sometimes, and sometimes not.

So its an intermitant probem?

Get the atf level cheked first before going any deeper into it. It can be done by any specialist or dealer. Then the atf can be examined (burnt smell)

Start from the basics then work up.

Cheers mate, yeah its intermittent, its normal if you switch the car off and then restart. (only for a one gear change either reverse or drive.) I will get the oil checked and take it from there.

If thats the case I would have thought it was an electrical problem and not mechanical. Start from the atf level check then go from there.

Mine did this a couple of times, and also was thunking between 1-2-3-2-1 changes, dealer has replaced valve chest (whatever that is) and changed ATF and filter under warranty and seems to be OK now.

The valve chest is the hydraulic valves that engage the clutches to engage ratios in the gearbox.

Thanks, do you know if the valve chest is expensive to replace?, and where is this located? do you have the PArt Number?

The valve chest is inside the gearbox and off the top of my head is about £250.
Before assuming the worst a change of ATF might be in order.

Thanks for your help guys, I have arranged to have the ATF and filter changed. Do we know how much oil we would need? I have been told 7ltrs is that correct?
