E280 Gearbox problems

Second hand gearbox's are an absolute nightmare. Every single one I have fitted has been knackered. So I don't fit them anymore.

The customers always supply them too.

When you buy a second hand 'box the number on the side must match exactly to the one you are replacing.

Also if your old gearbox has metal in the fluid the torque converter will need to be flushed out too. I take it you used the old 'verter? I hope they flushed it?

Oh the software can't be re-programmed.

I'm beginning to see the reasoning behind this. I really don't know the condition of the replacement gearbox as it was delivered direct to the fitter. The supplier informed me the replacement 'box came with torque converter so I assume my old one is still in the old box.
What a nightmare.

I have emailed the supplier to see what they have to say.

They will probably swap the gearbox for another. They will never pay for the labour costs. Good luck in getting them to actually do anything. I actually too one place to court over an engine I bought

Second hand parts are nightmare 8 times out of 10.

If it was me I would re-furb your old box and TC. The cost should be no more than £1500 plus 5 hours labour to remove and re-fit. Then you will have a perfect 'box for many many more miles as long as the fluid is changed. How good do you think these second hand boxes are? How many miles have they done? etc etc

Was it D*********s?

You have a PM.

I was warned by my local mechanic not to touch a 2nd hand 'box. I should have listened:doh:

If the supplier is the one implied above then you will have to be very tenacious and put everything in writing and recorded delivery to have any chance of a refund even for the gearbox without the labour. You will probably have to issue a summons in the small claims court before you get your money back. Don't arrange anything with them by phone. Sorry to hear about your problems.

Good.
Suggest that you google the name of the supplier and see what comes up.
In any event put the problem to them in writing and ask for them to refund the cost of the box - tell them it will be available for them to collect between dates a and b. Give them a reasonable period to collect it - like 7 days. You need to do this because they may not bother collecting it and then the garage will start to ask you what to do with it.
A friend of mine had a terrible time with a certain supplier - in the end they refunded the day before the date of the small claims hearing - and even at that point they were trying to offer less to settle before the hearing - and they never bothered to collect the (duff) engine.

A brand new box is £2087 plus vat. However Mercedes do a refurbished box at much less. Comes with a guarantee too.

Can anyone give me the correct gearbox model for my 1998 W210 E280 Petrol?
The Vin no' is as follows WDB2100632A624736
Engine no' 11292130151599

I realise its a 722.6 gearbox, but I need to know the digit(s) after the 6 to get the correct one.
If anyone has a link for me to look it up myself, that is fine.

Many thanks.

Take the number from the side of your original box.

I don't have that. It's still at the gearbox fitters workshop and he is closed until Monday.

I have found out its a 722.606 from the epc anyway.

Just got this message from the supplier of the wrong gearbox. Can this be correct that the exact same gearbox ie 722.606 is fitted to all V6 petrol W210's?

As it states in our terms and conditions we dont refund the cost of consequential loss. The gearbox is the correct one for the vehicle and also for v6 across the range. We cannot supply you with a replacement until the faulty unit has been collected.
I think this is going to turn nasty with my supplier. I'm not paying for removal and refitting again if I can help it. His fault, he pays as far as I'm concerned and I don't give a monkeys about their T&Cs. Never got to read those until the 'box was fitted anyway.

Just found a very useful list of Mercedes 722.6 gearboxes and which application fits each model.

722.6 ZF transmission application

Biting the bullet and having the faulty replacement removed for a replacement 722.606.
If this goes wrong, I'll set it on fire!;)

Far too good to break, a secondhand or rebuilt box is the way to go if possible. I am in a similar position right now with my '97 C180 but I think mine has a simpler gearbox settup. My gearbox problem is not quite as serious either as I am still using it everyday. It just slips if I give it a bootfull from the traffic lights !! so the answer at the moment is to drive it a bit more gently untill I change the fluid and filter myself in about a weeks time and then take it from there, but if needs be I will probably go for a secondhand gearbox from a reputable Mercedes breaker then fit it myself.
